The Media Lab calls for the Open Innovation Challenge

The Media Lab is offering up to €15,000 in funding for solutions that advance personalization in the newsroom. Anyone with relevant ideas can submit them until November 30th.

With the Open Innovation Challenge, the Media Lab Bayern for startups whose solutions transform personalization in newsrooms from a time-consuming extra task into an efficient focus. Specifically, they focus on four areas: newsletters, social media, websites, and curation. Both finished products that can be used immediately and concepts that can be implemented quickly are welcome.

Personalization means tailoring all aspects of newsroom work more and more specifically to specific user groups or even individual users. Whether it's topic selection, topic preparation, or user interaction, personalization is a challenge for editorial departments because it ties up resources. At the same time, concepts are lacking.

Participation and winnings in the Open Innovation Challenge

Applications are open until November 30, 2021. You should provide a detailed description of your solution or a test access for the jury. The jury, consisting of experts from the Mittelbayerische Zeitung, Nürnberger Presse, and Media Lab, will then select five winners. The winners are expected to be announced on December 15.

The idea or solution deemed most effective by the jury will receive a prize of €15,000. The other four winners will each receive €10,000. With the prize money, the Media Lab will support the winners in making their solutions available to up to ten media outlets for use for one year. Pure concepts will even be offered to media outlets for an unlimited period. This allows the media industry to test the solutions risk-free and then collaborate directly with the startup if necessary.
