Founding in Munich: University programs make it easier for startups to settle

Munich's colleges and universities support international high-tech founders on their path to successful startups in Munich. The 'Munich Global Impact Sprint' program provides knowledge and contacts, and the 'TUM Deep Tech IDEAward' offers prize money of €40,000.

Munich's startup ecosystem has evolved into one of the most important international hotspots. To facilitate the establishment of potential founders in Munich, Munich's colleges and universities offer several support programs, including the Munich Global Impact Sprint and the TUM Deep Tech IDEAward.

The Munich Global Impact Sprint

The Munich Global Impact Sprint (MGIS) is an intensive biannual program designed to support entrepreneurial talent upon their arrival in the Munich ecosystem. MGIS offers participants support through its incubators. UnternehmerTUM, SCE and that LMU IECPart of the program is regular exchange with partners from industry and academia. Participants are also assigned a TUM startup advisor, receive workspaces, support with funding applications, and access to workshops. The program is free of charge.

To participate, no company must have been founded by the end of the program. At least one team member must be a non-German citizen. The business model should be in a deep tech field, preferably artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing, sustainable mobility, or intelligent transportation. Participants should also be willing to establish their company in Munich.

The MGIS is an initiative of the Technical University of Munich, the Munich University of Applied Sciences, and the Ludwig Maximilian University, as well as their innovation and entrepreneurship centers. The MGIS is funded and supported by the EXIST Potentials program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Applications for the 2nd batch are open until September 6, 2021.

The TUM Deep Tech IDEAward

The TUM DeepTech IDEAward enables international founders to finance their entry into the Munich ecosystem. A jury of experts will select three winning teams and award a total of €40,000 in prize money. First place will receive €17,000, second place €13,000, and third place €10,000. In addition, four scholarships worth €10,000 each will be awarded for a first year in Munich.

To participate, a team must be at least half non-German citizens. The idea must be new or an innovative modification of an existing idea and originate from the deep tech field. Furthermore, applicants must not already be supported or employed by a German university. To apply, the founding teams must submit an idea paper, a three-minute pitch video, and the participation form.

Applications for the TUM Deep Tech IDEAward are possible until August 31.
