The lifestyle magazine Monocle has published its annual ranking of the 25 most livable cities for the twelfth time. Munich takes first place, ahead of Tokyo and Vienna.
Munich is the most livable city in the world—at least according to London-based magazine Monocle. The Bavarian capital ranked third last year and this year overtakes the two top spots from 2017, Tokyo and Vienna.
Monocle likes the Munich mix
The evaluation takes into account, among other things, safety, infrastructure, international accessibility, the attractiveness of the city's architecture, and the quality of the nightlife. The magazine particularly praises Munich's successful blend of modernity and serenity. (Video from minute 7:23):
“The Bavarian city feels at once relaxed and dynamic, cosmopolitan yet traditional.”
Munich's higher housing costs are more than offset by the city's abundant green spaces, safe and clean streets, and proximity to the Alps and lakes, which are ideal for hiking, skiing, and sailing. The study also praises the city's economic environment, which creates favorable conditions for both startups and established companies.
“It is no wonder that so many people from all over the world are increasingly calling the city their home.”
In addition to Munich, three other German cities make it into the top 25. Berlin ranks sixth, Hamburg eighth, and Düsseldorf 18th. No other country has as many listed cities.
