Business climate in the digital sector reaches highest level in two and a half years

The business climate in the digital sector, measured by Bitkom and the Ifo Institute, has reached its highest level since November 2018. In contrast, the overall economy is improving only slowly.

In April, the index for the current business situation rose by 5.6 points to 38.1 points. Business expectations for the next six months also improved by 4.6 points to 25.5 points. Bitkom-Ifo Digital Index, which reflects the business climate, climbed significantly by 5.0 points to 31.7 points compared to the previous month. This is higher than before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Business climate benefits from digitalization due to Corona

"Business in the digital sector is doing better than it has in a long time. The accelerated vaccination campaign and the prospect of a further recovery in the German economy make companies very confident about the rest of the year,"

says Bitkom President Achim Berg.

"The Bitkom industry is proving resilient to short-term economic downturns, which many other industries have experienced repeatedly during the coronavirus crisis. The pandemic is driving digitalization in all areas, and as soon as other sectors recover, we expect additional momentum in investments."

The individual index for employment trends in the digital sector is also rising significantly. The majority of surveyed companies plan to hire additional workers in the next three months. The price index, however, is declining slightly, indicating falling prices.

In the overall economy, the mood remains almost unchanged compared to the previous month. Ifo business climate increased slightly by 0.3 points to 11.5 points. The business situation improved by 2.3 points to 14.4 points. Expectations declined by 1.6 points but remained positive at 8.7 points.
