Sono Motors presents two new prototypes at CES

At CES 2021, Sono Motors presented – in addition to the second prototype of the Sion – also the first prototype of a solar or photovoltaic trailer for trucks, which was produced jointly with the Finnish solar manufacturer Valoe.

In December, Sono Motors was able to Financing round of 45 million euros The Munich startup has now presented the latest prototype of its Sion at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES)But that's not all: The Munich-based startup also presented a first prototype of its solar or photovoltaic trailer for trucks to a broad audience. Sono Motors says it aims to demonstrate the numerous possible applications of solar technology for various forms of mobility. Jona Christians, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sono Motors, said:

"We've found a way to deliver sustainable, free energy across multiple modes of transportation by replacing the traditional paint process with integrated solar technology. Because Sono's solar technology is cheaper, lighter, and much more efficient than conventional glass solar cells, I'm very excited about the potential uses that come with its incredible flexibility. We're constantly developing this technology and looking forward to what we can achieve with it in the future."

What’s new about the second prototype generation of the Sion?

For the first time, the 'new' Sion features parts intended for series production. These come either from series suppliers or are near-series components. Sono Motors successfully implemented the electric drive unit, chassis, and MPPT Central Unit (MCU) intended for series production. Furthermore, all straight and curved exterior parts of the vehicle were equipped with solar panels.

The Munich-based startup is also making progress in the development of the Sono app and infotainment system. The on-board control units intended for series production now communicate with the app and infotainment system, for example, for live tracking of solar energy, keyless entry, opening the tailgate, or controlling the temperature and lighting in the interior.
