The Munich-based startup Delicious Data was awarded the federal "Too Good for the Bin" prize for its forecasting system for canteens and cafeterias. The system prevents overproduction of food, so that large-scale kitchens have to throw away less food.
A total of 131 ideas were submitted this year for the 2020 Federal Prize "Too Good for the Bin." For the fifth time, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) awarded the prize to projects that contribute to to reduce food wasteDelicious Data was named winner in the “Digitalization” category of the “Too Good for the Bin” award.
The forecasting system from the Munich startup combines artificial intelligence with empirical data from location-specific and daily factors and calculates the required portions. A pilot project with five student unions has now been completed. Now, other cafeterias and canteens are already using the system. Estimating the exact amount of food is a major challenge for large kitchens, but this can be more easily addressed with the help of the Munich startup's digital forecasting system.
