IBM and Fortiss have established a joint research center for artificial intelligence (AI) in Munich. The partners plan to jointly develop secure AI technologies for business and society at the IBM Watson IoT Center.
Not only companies but also the administration in Bavaria are working to unlock the potential of AI technologies. The question of the trustworthiness of these technologies plays a role in this. Business and society can only use AI if it makes reliable decisions even in complex situations and is protected against targeted attacks. At the same time, confidentiality and privacy play a major role in data processing.
This is precisely where the new AI research center comes in, as more than 50 scientists from IBM and Fortiss will research and develop new, AI-supported software solutions. The focus is on AI for the Internet of ThingsAI-supported assistance systems, prototypes for digitalized citizen services, and reliable, autonomously controlled robots are particularly exciting for researchers. Infrastructure such as energy and water supplies could also be equipped with AI.

This also knows Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. He commented:
"Artificial intelligence is one of the key drivers of future economic development. We are proud that Fortiss and IBM will jointly develop these pioneering technologies in Bavaria. They are of outstanding importance for the competitiveness of Bavaria as a high-tech location."
IBM and Fortiss want to work together to explore how AI algorithms can be used, among other things, in small and medium-sized businesses. In addition to basic research, this also involves developing prototypes that will then lead to industrial products.
