Munich ranks seventh in a Europe-wide study of the most popular startup locations. previous year Munich was still in ninth place in the "Startup Heatmap Europe." However, there has been no change at the top of the ranking.
For the third time since 2016, Startup Heatmap Europe surveyed more than 3,000 founders, startup employees, and other members of the tech community where they would launch their startup if they were starting from scratch. The study authors used the results to compile a ranking of Europe's most popular startup hotspots.
With six percent of the responses, Munich ranks seventh in Europe. This represents a jump of two places compared to the previous year.
The biggest riser in the Startup Heatmap comes from Switzerland
At the top of the ranking, everything remains the same as last year. London remains Europe's most popular startup hotspot with 41 percent of the responses, closely followed by Berlin with 40 percent. Barcelona also makes the podium, as in the previous year, with 20 percent. Following behind are Paris, Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Munich. Zurich makes the biggest leap: The Swiss metropolis takes ninth place in Europe. Last year, Zurich ranked 20th, climbing a full eleven places.
Although London defended its top spot from last year, the impending Brexit left a significant mark on the results. Last year, 55 percent, an increase of 14 percentage points, named the English capital as the best place to found a startup. London owes its leading position in particular to its good access to capital. 94 percent of respondents voted for the metropolis on the Thames. Berlin particularly scores highly for its startup ecosystem.
