The Munich-based design department of the electric car startup NIO sweeps the Automotive Brand Contest: The company takes first place in three categories.
For the concept car EVE, which NIO presented in March at SXSW in Austin presented to the public for the first time, the company received awards in the "Concepts," "Brand Design," and "Digital" categories at the 2017 Automotive Brand Contest. The Munich-based NIO branch is responsible for the award-winning design. The company employs 130 of its more than 2,600 employees in the state capital. The carmaker, headquartered in China, sees itself as a "globally operating startup" and, in addition to Munich, has offices in Shanghai, San Jose, London, and 15 other locations.
The jury explains its choice as follows:
"The interior was the starting point for the vehicle's design. The goal was to create an ambience for relaxed driving—and, above all, for 'being driven.' The concept shows how advanced autonomous driving could be experienced in the future."
“Testament to high aesthetic standards”
NIO's design chief Kris Tomasson says:
“I'm very happy. (…) Winning in these categories is a testament to our motivation.”
Tomasson emphasized both the high standards of aesthetics and the sense of technical detail and expressed his gratitude to the NIO team.
The awards were presented to the company at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. According to its own information, the Automotive Brand Contest is the only neutral international design competition for automotive brands
