That was 2024 – a year of change and opportunities: Munich’s startup ecosystem looks ahead

2024 was an exciting year for the startup scene in Munich. Like many other European innovation hubs, we faced challenges – from economic and political uncertainty to global upheaval. But what remains is the courage and inventiveness of the founders who are driving Munich forward even in turbulent times.

Between challenges and resilience

The general economic headwind was also noticeable in the startup world: financing became more cautious and buzzwords such as profitability replaced the unlimited growth of previous years in some places, as recorded by the German Startup Monitor

But the Munich scene has shown that resilience is more than just a buzzword. Numerous startups have refined their business models this year, reassessed markets, and demonstrated that even in difficult times, innovative ideas are needed to solve real problems.

The fact that at a Munich university – the TUM – the Most academic patents in Europe are registered with the Patent Office, shows the innovative power of our city and that Munich will further consolidate its role as a center for innovation.

Highlights of the year

Munich Startup Festival: In 2024, we once again succeeded in bringing Munich's startup ecosystem together at Backstage. With inspiring keynotes and numerous networking opportunities, the festival became a meeting place for founders, investors, and established companies. The atmosphere was characterized by a spirit of optimism, new ideas, and the clear goal of strengthening Munich's position as a leading innovation center.

The positive response has shown that Munich needs this exchange – and we will continue it. We are already looking forward to bringing together the most important players in the startup ecosystem again on July 16, 2025, at the Munich Startup Festival to network with everyone!

The insolvency of Off (Camperboys) and Startups for the energy transition were of particular interest to you this year. This reinforces the ever-growing focus on sustainability and impact startups, which are gaining increasing visibility and support in Munich. It also demonstrates how closely joy and sorrow are intertwined. With Off, a promising travel company that has shaped Munich's startup landscape in the past, slipped into insolvency.

A look ahead: Munich as a future laboratory

While 2024 has given us time for reflection, we are looking ahead. The signs for Munich's future are clearly pointing toward a new era. Startups are and will remain the driving force when it comes to finding solutions to technological, economic, and societal challenges.

And that's precisely why the Munich Startup Team has taken it upon itself to examine how we can further improve our work and the framework conditions. Only in this way—with active networking between politics, science, companies, and startups—will Munich have the best conditions to further develop itself as a leading innovation hub in Europe.

Strong together in 2025

This year has shown that our ecosystem is not only powerful but also resilient. The solidarity and, in particular, the desire for coordinated collaboration within Munich's startup community has been stronger than ever before. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the founders, startups, partners, and supporters who contribute every day to Munich's growth and inspiration.

With this in mind, we wish you a peaceful end to the year and a good start to the new year 2025!
