In a study involving 66 patients with hereditary polycystic kidney disease, also known as cystic kidney disease, physicians at the University of Cologne investigated the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of a ketogenic diet. Experts in personalized nutrition Foodpunk researchers created diet plans for the participants in the experimental group. The study was conducted in Cell Reports Medicine journal published.
The study results confirmed the assumption of a positive effect. Not only was the diet very well-accepted, but it also led to positive changes in important parameters such as kidney function. Overall, 95 percent of participants considered the ketogenic diet feasible. Using biomarkers, the research team was able to demonstrate that the participants had actually adhered to the ketogenic diet. The results are relevant to many people, as polycystic kidney disease is the most common genetic kidney disease and causes approximately 10 percent of all cases of kidney failure.
“Foodpunk app helps with dietary changes”
Numerous studies have already examined the role of nutrition in diseases and the aging process in general. The study at the University Hospital of Cologne contributed to this by using personalized nutrition plans from Foodpunk. The study's leader, Professor Dr. Roman-Ulrich Müller, commented:
"Most patients find it difficult to implement changes in their eating habits in everyday life. However, the study participants were quite successful in doing so. In our view, the use of the Foodpunk meal plans in the study made a significant contribution to this. The Foodpunk app offers solutions to the practical challenges that a change in diet often brings with it in everyday life. For example, the option to simply replace a food item from the plan if it is unavailable in the supermarket."
"We are very proud that our team was able to make such an important contribution to the study. We believe that personalized nutrition must always be easy to implement and simply delicious. That's why we're thrilled that our recipes and meal plans were so well received by the participants and contributed to a successful dietary change."
says Foodpunk founder and CEO Marina Lommel.
