The travel startup founded in 2016 by Paul Pizzinini and Andreas Mall Camperboys has undergone a rebranding and now operates under the name "Off." According to the Munich-based company, the name change was not due to external circumstances such as economic necessity, backlash, or internal restructuring. Rather, the new name aims to become more inclusive and not exclude anyone. The team has grown since its founding seven years ago and now consists of over 150 employees, according to the company. The name Camperboys does not reflect this diversity. Co-founder Paul Pizzinini explains:
“We want the phrase ‘But you’re not a boy’ to no longer exclude anyone.”
Off instead of online
The new company name also aims to refocus camping on the essence of 'being outdoors.' Off explains in an official statement:
"Calm down, spend time in nature, and experience adventures. Being off-the-grid has never been more important than it is now. In our everyday lives, we're always online, always reachable, always busy—what better way to break that up than with an off-the-grid camping trip into nature?"
On social media like Instagram The rebranding has not only been received favorably in the comment sections; some users consider the old name more authentic. Issues such as SEO and brand positioning with the new, more generic name itself are also pointed out. Others, however, congratulate the brand on what they consider a successful rebranding.
Financial injection in the seven-figure range
At the beginning of the year, Off – then still Camperboys – secured fresh capital in the seven-figure range with a minority stake from the Helvetia Venture Fund. The investment was intended to drive the company's expansion. According to the company, the Off rental fleet currently consists of around 800 campers, which can be rented at locations in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt (Main), Halle, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, and Weilheim (Teck). The company is also working on a digital customer journey to make route planning easier for its customers with the personalized Off Guide.
