A look into the Munich Startup Insights shows that, despite all the crises and uncertainties, the Munich startup scene got off lightly in 2022. The preliminary figures for the year show that with around €2.3 billion raised in 196 financing rounds, 2022 was significantly weaker than the previous year (€4.8 billion in 257 financings), but despite everything, it was still more successful than 2019, the last year without major cuts. Back then, €1.8 billion was raised in 178 investment rounds.
A look at the average financing amounts also gives cause for confidence: If one excludes the mega rounds of over 100 million euros, the average in 2022 was 7.9 million euros. Record year 2021 In contrast, it was only 7.3 million euros. On the other hand, one shouldn't let these numbers discourage them. Many startups report that fundraising has become significantly more difficult – even if they still manage to succeed in the end.
Data, startups, events – the 2022 annual review
In addition to the data-driven conclusion for 2022, for this episode of our podcast we also asked ourselves which startups particularly stuck in the editors' minds. Starting at minute 4:10, we'll introduce four of them in more detail and explain what makes them so special to us. For once, we won't reveal the exact startups at this point.
The final part of our review, starting at minute 12:30, focuses on the highlights from our events department. From the European Championships to the mulled wine tour, there was a lot to see this year.
