Within Europe, the technical university ranks twelfth, and within the European Union, third. LMU ranked 59th internationally, the second-best German university. Last year, the Munich university ranked 64th. This puts LMU in 14th place in Europe and fifth place within the European Union.
The Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg is ranked third in the world, ranking 65th. The Free University of Berlin, ranked 118th, and the Humboldt University of Berlin, ranked 131st, follow in fourth and fifth place among all German universities.
Munich universities shine in various areas
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) near Boston leads the global rankings, followed by Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Stanford near California's Silicon Valley, Oxford in England, and Harvard near Boston.
Rankings for individual departments provide deeper insight into the strengths and weaknesses of each university. The Technical University of Munich (TUM) particularly excels in engineering and technology, ranking 19th worldwide. TUM also ranks a very good 28th in the natural sciences.
The Ludwig Maximilian University scores highly in the fields of life sciences and medicine (38), arts and humanities (40), and also in the natural sciences (46).
