2 million euros: Bavarian government supports TUM Venture Labs

The Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts is supporting the establishment of the TUM Venture Labs with two million euros. This initiative, jointly run by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and UnternehmerTUM, aims to accelerate the translation of cutting-edge research into marketable applications.

Since its launch in October 2020, eight Venture Labs have been launched. She are working in the technology fields of Software/AI, Robotics/AI, Quantum, Aerospace, Built Environment, Chemistry, Healthcare, and Food-Agro-Biotech. Additional labs in the focus areas of Additive Manufacturing and Sustainability/Circular/BioEconomy/Energy are currently in the starting blocks, with Smart Mobility to follow shortly.

Around 200 startup teams are already being supported by the Venture Labs and benefiting from the tailored support services. These include incubation space, laboratories and technical infrastructure, training and venturing programs, and access to global networks of companies and investors. Furthermore, the startup teams gain direct access to cutting-edge research and contacts with experts with a deep understanding of their markets. In this way, the TUM Venture Labs create dynamic ecosystems from which not only individual companies but entire startup families can emerge. In this way, the initiative also aims to become a model for startup support at German universities.

“The TUM Venture Labs unleash the joy of innovation”

"The TUM Venture Labs unleash the joy of innovation. With their unique structure, they help translate cutting-edge research into rapid and innovative applications – they are a startup catalyst and our Bavarian blueprint for promoting a new entrepreneurial culture at universities. 'Idea in Bavaria' becomes 'Made in Bavaria' here."

says Markus Blume, Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts.

“The funding from the Bavarian State Government gives us a strong boost to offer the dynamic and creative founding teams the best possible infrastructure for deeptech development,”

explained Thomas F. Hofmann, President of TUM.

“We want to advance Munich’s path to becoming Europe’s leading technology center and thus contribute to the EU’s technological sovereignty in the most important future fields.”

And Helmut Schönenberger, CEO of UnternehmerTUM and Vice President for Entrepreneurship at TUM, adds:

"With the TUM Venture Labs, we are also strengthening our collaboration with other innovative universities and research institutions in Bavaria, Germany, and Europe. Through the exchange of experiences and the joint promotion of outstanding entrepreneurial talent and spin-offs, we are making an important contribution to the European innovation system."
