Munich is one of Europe's leading tech cities

The "Tech Cities of the Future" ranking focuses on cities with the most promising prospects for startups, technology, and innovation investments. Munich makes it into the top ten in the Europe-wide evaluation.

In the first-ever ranking of the most tech-friendly cities, Munich ranks sixth overall. London leads the table, followed by Paris, Dublin, and Amsterdam. Berlin takes fifth place.

The overall ranking is divided into six categories: economic potential, foreign Direct investments (FDI performance), foreign direct investment strategies (FDI strategy), startup environment, innovation and attractiveness, and cost efficiency. Munich performs particularly well in the areas of innovation and attractiveness, ranking third behind London and Paris. Its fifth place in the startup environment is also impressive. Here, Munich ranks behind London, Reading, Berlin, and Warsaw.

In terms of strategies for foreign direct investment, Munich ranks 8th. Here, the report not only sees metropolises such as London or Berlin ahead, but also cities and regions such as Barcelona and Catalonia, the Tricity (the triangle of Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia in Poland) and Lyon in France.

About Tech Cities of the Future

The "Tech Cities of the Future 2020/21" ranking was compiled by FDI Intelligence, a Financial Times inward investment service, and The Next Web (TNW). Data was collected for 76 cities in five categories: economic potential, innovation and attractiveness, FDI performance, cost efficiency, and startup environment. For the sixth category, FDI strategy, a survey of 50 submissions was evaluated. Cities ranking in the top 20 in this category received bonus points that contributed to their overall score. The data subcategory rankings and the FDI strategy rankings together form the overall ranking.
