Munich as a creative hub: Only Paris is more creative

Good news for Munich as a creative hub: The Isar metropolis ranks second behind Paris in a European comparison of the cultural and creative industries. Among German cities, it even ranks first. This is confirmed by a recent comparative monitor presented by the EU Commission.

The study examined how European cities perform in terms of "cultural vibrancy," "creative economy," and "enabling environment." Within these categories, factors such as the importance of cultural institutions, participation, knowledge-based and new jobs, innovation, education, tolerance and openness, international relations, and the quality of leadership and governance were assessed.

Many patent applications and jobs in the media industry

Compared to other European cities, Munich ranks high in the "creative industries" category. This is due to its leading role in patent applications, outstanding development of design applications, and the number of jobs in media and communications. Compared to other German cities, Munich is particularly strong in the areas of "cultural participation and attractiveness," "openness, tolerance, and trust," and "international relations."

The comparison monitor was developed by the scientific service of the EU Commission and compares 190 cities of different sizes from 30 European countries, including 18 German cities.

Creative industry metropolis between London and Paris

The size of a city is not decisive for its cultural and creative output. Capital cities in many European countries are overtaken by other cities in the rankings, including in Germany – Munich is significantly ahead of Berlin. Clemens Baumgärtner says about the positive result:

"Munich has now officially become a cultural and creative industries metropolis, ranking between London and Paris. This confirms the outstanding achievements of all those working in the cultural and creative industries in Munich and the work of all institutions in Munich that strive to improve the location."

The state capital supports the creative industry with its Culture and Creative Industries Competence Team. The team is responsible for supporting cultural and creative professionals in Munich and the metropolitan region.
