FSIWS: New incubator for food startups

The Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) has Food startup The Weihenstephan Food and Beverage Incubator (FSIWS) was established to promote entrepreneurial ideas in the food sector.

In recent years, five successful food startups have been founded as part of the Food Technology program at HSWT. The university also offers modules “Founding a food startup”, "Product Development," and "Business Management" in the Food Technology program offer interesting opportunities for potential entrepreneurs. In fall 2019, the "Food Quality" Master's program will also launch, offering the specializations "Food Safety" and "Product Development."

Over the past 24 months, a program has been launched to help young entrepreneurs bring their products to market. The university is responding to a constantly growing market. The food industry, with a turnover of almost 180 billion euros, nearly 600,000 employees, and over 6,000 companies, is the fourth-largest industrial sector in Germany.

The Weihenstephan Food Startup Incubator (FSIWS) offers founders pilot plant and laboratory space approved for food production. Here, they can not only produce food samples but also conduct test production for initial market testing.

Specialized experts support the young entrepreneurs during the company's founding and market launch. Furthermore, through the FSIWS, founders have direct access to professionally experienced students from all areas of the food value chain. The founders can also benefit from the networking opportunities offered by HSWT and the Weihenstephan campus, enabling them to meet potential cooperation partners.

Big plans for the future

HSWT aims to achieve great things with the FSIWS. The aim is to continuously increase the number of food startups. Work is already underway to expand the infrastructure. The existing space is expected to be doubled by 2021 with the new Brewing and Beverage Center.
