Buy smart public transport tickets across cities – 7 questions for… Bluego!

The Munich-based startup Bluego aims to simplify ticket purchasing for local public transport (ÖPNV). No matter the city, and without an app. A major challenge, but with their innovative approach, founders Felix Pröhl and Marina Weinehl have already found their first cooperation partners. The two have already been awarded the "Gipfelstürmer" prize. excellentWe have Plant1-Startup asked our 7 questions.

1. Who are you and what do you do? Please briefly introduce yourself and your product!

Marina Weinehl, founder of Bluego.

Our idea of Bluego is to develop a software solution that automates the ticket purchasing process for local public transport and simultaneously creates added value for users and transport companies. This is implemented through a modular solution that collects journey data (such as the starting station and the stations passed) using smartphone sensors. Based on this data, we can offer the passenger the optimal ticket. The module will be integrated into the transport companies' existing applications.

We are two founders with different areas of expertise. Felix Pröhl (24), a BA in Business Administration, is responsible for the technical implementation of the product. He is the driving force when it comes to planning and implementing milestones in product development. And I, Marina Weinehl (21), also a BA in Business Administration, take care of the financial side of the startup. I am also responsible for organizational tasks and administrative processes.

2. But that's been around for a long time!

There are a few solutions already available on the market, but only in combination with hardware. This means that for these ticketing systems to work, beacons or optical signals must be installed in all vehicles—whether buses, trains, or trams. Large transport companies, in particular, with huge vehicle fleets, have to invest a lot of money in installation. There are also additional costs for regular maintenance.

Bluego takes a completely different approach. We use something that almost everyone carries with them these days: their smartphone. To book the best possible ticket for the passenger, we need to know where they boarded (the station and line), which stations they passed, and where they got off. With the help of the sensors built into smartphones, we can collect precisely this information. The benefits for the passenger: they no longer have to deal with complicated fare systems; they always have a valid ticket at the best price.

Additionally, passengers don't have to download another app. Our module will be integrated into the transport company's existing app. Important: This feature can be disabled at any time.

Pressure to advance innovative public transport projects

3. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Of course, like many other startups, we approached the matter somewhat naively. We quickly learned that the internal decision-making processes in transport companies are long and sluggish. The most important thing, therefore, is to involve management as early as possible. Only then can the necessary pressure be exerted to drive innovative projects forward.

4. Let’s get down to business: How is business going?

We've found a great partner who supports us. Only thanks to this are we even able to implement our idea. Since Bluego was only founded last year, we have to be realistic and lower our revenue expectations. Nevertheless, our goal for 2019 is to acquire two to three customers. 2019 is all about growth for us.

5. What does Munich mean to you?

Munich is a perfect location. There are many startup programs that provide optimal support and network for startups. It's a great place to exchange ideas with other founders and discuss common problems. Munich also has a lot to offer us personally. One of the largest and most profitable transport companies in Germany is based in Munich. This makes Munich very attractive both as a business location and for personal reasons.

6. How will your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we see you soon at Epic Fail Night?

We're not thinking that far yet. The market offers many opportunities for innovation. However, due to outdated structures and entrenched processes, these innovations often go unnoticed or have very long development cycles. We want to change that and encourage other startups to enter the public transport sector.

7. Beer or Prosecco?

Voting results: Four for beer, only one for Prosecco. Therefore: Beer!

Update from 21.12.2020: Bluego has changed its name and is now called Golane.
