Munich startup metaio acquired by Apple

Apple was on a shopping spree in the Bavarian capital and acquired the Munich-based augmented reality startup metaio, according to the American magazine   TechCrunch  End of May.

The American technology group commented on the purchase with the usual wording for takeovers: “Apple buys smaller IT companies from time to time.” The purchase price is not known.

Successful: Software Startup metaio

Metaio, an augmented reality ("AR") specialist, combines views of the real world with digital information. The startup was founded in 2003 at the Garching technology and startup center Gate. The Munich-based startup has already implemented numerous major projects, such as a catalog for Ikea that allowed users to see on their device what the furniture would look like in their own home, multimedia image and sound supplements for the Süddeutsche Zeitung magazine, and various AR solutions for the automotive industry.

An article about metaio appeared in the March 2013 issue of the IHK magazine for Munich and Upper Bavaria, which also sheds light on the background of the Munich startup.
