Starting your own business is still a male endeavor. 6.5% of men and only 4% of women in Germany have founded or are in the process of founding a company in the last three and a half years. This is a result of the “Global Entrepreneurship Monitors”, which the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) Published at the end of April 2015.
Reasons for founding
The motives of men and women for starting a business also differ. Men are drawn to self-employment by the desire for independence, self-fulfillment, and a high income. According to the study, women are more likely to become self-employed because they can't find a suitable job.
Lack of role models or lack of knowledge?
The women surveyed lack female entrepreneurs as role models. And role models are "very important for the decision to become self-employed," explain the labor market experts. Furthermore, women sometimes lack the relevant skills – or perhaps self-confidence? Only 32 percent of women, compared to 47 percent of men, believe they have the knowledge they need to successfully start a business.
