Avelios Medical: Digitizing the hospital of the future

Old IT systems are slowing hospitals down – Avelios Medical is providing a solution. The Munich-based startup is developing a modern hospital information system that leverages structured data, enables AI, and automates administration. How a research project became a beacon of hope for the industry.

Munich Startup: What is your StartupWhat problem are you solving?

Avelios Medical: We offer a completely newly developed Hospital Information System (HIS) of the future as the basis for intelligent patient care. Our modular software platform captures patient data in a fully structured and semantically annotated format. This lays the foundation for artificial intelligence, data-driven medicine, and the automation of administrative processes.

Munich Startup: But that's been around for a long time!

Avelios Medical: The HIS market is oligopolistic, consisting of a handful of competitors who mostly developed their systems in the 1990s with a focus on administration and billing. Our system, on the other hand, was developed from the ground up: we differentiate ourselves through the consistent collection of structured data, a state-of-the-art microservice architecture, and a treatment process-oriented structure.

AI research project was the foundation for Avelios Medical

Munich Startup: What is your founding story?

Avelios Medical: The idea originated in an AI research project. We quickly realized that legacy systems couldn't deliver the necessary data in sufficient quality and burdened physicians with more than three hours of administrative work every day. Therefore, we decided to redevelop the core system as the basis for new healthcare services.

Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Avelios Medical: The greatest challenge lies in the system itself: Hospitals are under enormous economic pressure, while the market is highly regulated and technological decision-making processes often take a long time. Our goal is to deliver quickly, reliably, and scalably in this environment – without compromising on security, quality, or user-centricity.

On the way to becoming a European HIS provider

Munich Startup: Where would you like to be in one year, where in five years?

Avelios Medical: The German-speaking market is facing major upheavals: The withdrawal of an established competitor, increasing demands for modern, AI-capable infrastructures, and the gaps exposed by COVID-19 in healthcare are creating a unique opportunity for real change. Our focus now is on closing precisely this gap as a reliable partner in hospital digitalization. Within a year, we therefore aim to have acquired a large number of new customers and further developed our software beyond the scope of a hospital information system with data-driven modules and as a networked platform.

In five years, we will be an established HIS provider in Europe with 500 to 1,000 employees and a three-digit number of customers.

Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?

Avelios Medical: Munich is a strong location. We benefit from our proximity to leading hospitals, research institutions, and excellent universities – this not only brings innovative strength but also access to top talent directly on site. At the same time, the scene here is focused, professional, and well-connected.

Munich Startup: Hidden champion or shooting star?

Avelios Medical: We are both. Still largely under the radar of the general public, but with strong technological substance, renowned partners, and a clear vision. Demand from the hospital sector shows that we are no longer an insider tip in the industry.
