Voltstorage reaches milestone in development of its Iron Salt Battery

The Munich-based startup Voltstorage is working on storage systems based on the particularly environmentally friendly iron redox flow technology, also known as iron salt battery technology. The startup has now celebrated the achievement of a new milestone in its development.

The Iron Salt Battery, as developed by Voltstorage, addresses the growing demand for long-term battery storage to support renewable energies. As an alternative to lithium-ion batteries, it offers a sustainable, cost-effective, and safe solution for long-term storage of wind or solar energy. International development of the technology is progressing, and the current status has been presented at events such as the International Flow Battery Forum (IFBF) in Glasgow and the ees Forum in Munich.

The Munich startup Voltstorage is working with the technology and pursuing further patent applications. This has enabled the company to begin the next development phase, which includes a twentyfold increase in performance. The implementation of fully automated test systems, an enhanced battery health management system, a defined form factor concept, and a higher technology readiness level (TRL) are also part of the concept for this newly initiated development phase.

Jakob Bitner, Co-Founder and CEO of Voltstorage, explains:

"We are already in discussions with potential partners to define solution concepts tailored to their specific needs. These include energy suppliers and large industrial companies seeking cost-effective, sustainable, and safe LDES solutions that will enable them to improve the production and use of renewable energy."

Voltstorage remains on schedule with its development

As part of the next development phase, which has now begun, Voltstorage is dividing its development work across several parallel facilities. In this way, the startup aims to increase the volume of test data collected. One of these facilities—Volststorage calls it a development stand—focuses on operation with multiple battery cells. Another, however, is equipped with a cell that is three times larger. The development stands are operated at Voltstorage's Munich location, enabling close collaboration between the research and development and product development teams.

Verena Graf, CTO of Voltstorage, says:

"The hard work and high level of expertise of our experts are critical to our success. We are confident that we can continue to stay on schedule with the development of our Iron Salt Battery and, through continuous progress, ultimately create a reliable and efficient LDES solution for the renewable energy market."
