Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> Start for Future \u2013 what exactly is behind it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klaus Sailer, Managing Director SCE:<\/em>  Start for Future (SFF) is a Allianz and an Entrepreneurship Hub<\/a>, which encompasses universities, startups, industry, and public organizations and aims to advance systemic innovation in Europe. To this end, SFF connects regional ecosystems, such as Munich, Barcelona, or Edinburgh, to jointly support talent and startups, but also to facilitate co-creation and technology transfer between startups, companies, academia, and civil society beyond their own ecosystem, for example, through well-coordinated programs and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are convinced that through the collaboration of many universities and ecosystems in Europe, we can further develop entrepreneurship and thus have a unique selling point with regard to China and America. To take these concerns to the next level, SFF has now officially established a new organizational structure, namely a European cooperative<\/a>, founded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> Which organizations are included? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavlina Vujovi\u0107, Head of International Projects SCE:<\/em>  A number of colleges and universities and their associated incubators are already actively involved in the SFF Alliance, mostly from Europe, but also from around the world, as are medium-sized and large companies, research and development centers, and public organizations representing regional ecosystems. More and more of these partners are now becoming active members of the cooperative. EIT KICs, the industry-specific Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), are also already part of the cooperative, as is currently the case with EIT Urban Mobility. As drivers and co-initiators from the Munich ecosystem, Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship and the Munich University of Applied Sciences have been involved from the beginning as founding members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leveraging collaborative synergies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup: <\/em>What goals and visions does the cooperative pursue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klaus Sailer, Managing Director SCE:<\/em> The main goal is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship at the European level. The cooperative strives to spread a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe\u2014by which we mean to all corners of Europe. This should be done in an open, democratic, systemic, and sustainable manner by promoting collaboration between universities and innovation stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By leveraging collaborative synergies, we aim to create excellence through volume, i.e., by involving many players. Therefore, the cooperative aims to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among innovation players within a shared, internationally highly interconnected ecosystem. This will support joint efforts to further develop and commercialize groundbreaking concepts and cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, there is the commitment to values. SFF is intended to benefit us all. The overarching vision is to tackle societal challenges with entrepreneurial means and mindset. The SFF cooperative is committed to addressing societal challenges and increasing the prosperity of the European population. Its focus on systemic innovation reflects the broad commitment to these goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added value through co-creation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> Why is it worth becoming a member of SFF?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavlina Vujovi\u0107, Head of International Projects SCE:<\/em> Quite simply: There's so much to be gained through collaboration and co-creation. In this respect, SFF also offers diverse added value for the various partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universities and incubators benefit from shared resources and networks and can, for example, also offer good opportunities to startups and innovation teams that are not located in their own fields of specialization by jointly utilizing the enormous pool of experts and highly specialized coaches for a wide variety of topics.
For example, SFF offers researchers, teachers, and external corporate and network partners access to entrepreneurship and innovation training courses and MOOCs, as well as a joint research group. Teachers also develop courses together, coordinate topics and content, or deliver them jointly.
SFF offers students, talented individuals, and early-stage startups the opportunity to work together on their projects and innovative solutions and to realize them within an international founding team. They can draw on the entire SFF network for support and mentoring. In our Open Incubation Program, we call this "from zero to hero."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all innovative companies and network partners, this is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from the know-how and resources of the university network and to work with the best and most innovative talents, startups, and collaboration partners worldwide. At the same time, they can help shape the definition of the most pressing societal issues and find solutions through entrepreneurial activities. In doing so, they learn how to apply new disruptive and systemic innovation approaches through collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concrete support for startups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> The cooperative also aims to support startups and offers investment opportunities. How does this work in practice? Can you share best practices?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavlina Vujovi\u0107, Head of International Projects SCE:<\/em> Startups gain access to global experts and mentors and can, for example, visit an incubator in a regional ecosystem that is particularly relevant to their industry, where they can potentially build their own network. In the last iteration of the SFF Open Incubator, one of Start for Future's core programs, we introduced new co-creation opportunities and mobility formats for startups to explore opportunities in the partner ecosystem with the support of the host incubator. We are pleased to see that international startups find this format very attractive. This year, we hosted a Spanish startup in Munich that wanted to explore collaboration with German companies in the hydrogen sector and was able to conclude a collaboration. The Italian startup Clearchain from our partner university in Pisa was also successfully accepted into the SCE incubator and was able to benefit from the offerings of the Munich ecosystem, particularly the AI+ Munich program. This gives startups access to industry-specific companies as well as to the investor networks of the SFF partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also connect startups with later-stage partner offerings, such as the EIT KICs, and initiate promising co-creation processes. One example of this is our collaboration with the EIT Urban Mobility Venture Builder Program, which supports startups with innovations in the field of sustainable mobility in their further scaling and financing through EIT Urban Mobility. Our collaboration with EIT Manufacturing works in a similar way. We regularly make our startups aware of these opportunities and create space for investors and business angels to present their offerings. This way, we can achieve a much greater impact and create a more effective roadmap for the development of startups. In this respect, SFF is the perfect door opener for all partners and a bridge between projects from the university environment and incubators towards further scaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start for Future: Great response in a short time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> What successes can Start for Future already demonstrate?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klaus Sailer, Managing Director SCE:<\/em> Having launched the initiative only about two years ago, we are pleasantly surprised by the rapid growth and the positive response we've received. I was particularly pleased when, at the first Start for Future Summit last year, Mariya Gabriel, then EU Commissioner for Innovation and now Bulgarian Prime Minister, recognized our alliance as a European best practice initiative for implementing the 'New European Innovation Agenda', the key European directive intended to restore Europe to its former innovative strength and technological leadership, or at least to catch up with it. As Mariya Gabriel said, it is crucial to both promote deep-tech innovations and connect innovative regions, as SFF is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em><\/strong> Where should the cooperative develop in the next few years?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavlina Vujovi\u0107, Head of International Projects SCE:<\/em> We currently have 53 partners in the alliance, and the number is growing rapidly. Of these, 18 were already official founding members when the European SFF cooperative was founded. However, we have much bigger plans and want 1,000 colleges and universities from 500 regional innovation ecosystems, with a focus on Europe, to participate and be active in the cooperative by 2035. If we achieve this, it will be possible to support and promote one million startups and start-up ideas by then. Our next ambitious milestone on the way is 100 colleges and universities by mid-2025. We want to achieve excellence by involving as many talented individuals, innovators, and startups as possible, thus making Europe a thought leader for systemic innovation and a future worth living in.
