The intersection of AI, startups, and sustainability is a relatively new and evolving field. So let's start with the core question: What do AI, entrepreneurship, and sustainability have in common? Just a few months ago, this would have been a question you'd have turned to Wikipedia, an encyclopedia, or a current academic article. But today, ChatGPT <\/strong>a quick answer ready:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBoth AI and responsible entrepreneurship require collaboration and cooperation between different stakeholders, including academia, industry and government.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Great. The answer is clearly formulated, correct, and somehow understandable. But it probably won't really help anyone. At best, it will give them food for thought. Everyone will ask themselves: What does this mean specifically for me<\/em>? And the answer depends primarily on who "I" am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A no-coding AI course for the public, startups, academics, and industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AI instructional videos are currently popping up like mushrooms on YouTube. However, the freely available courses are mostly superficial introductions to what AI actually is and rarely help solve concrete problems. Yet the demand is enormous. Everyone should, and many want, to understand the significance of the technology. Therefore, state<\/a> and even from the U.N.<\/a> Funded learning platforms on AI have been rolled out and operated. Even large corporations such as Microsoft, Google, and AMD provide freely accessible learning content on AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are often technical overviews of machine learning for programmers. A paradise for tech-savvy talents or computer scientists interested in machine learning, but they aren't intended for the general public. Sometimes they focus on very specific use cases, perhaps on image recognition or analytical applications for a very specific industry, such as fintech. Certainly exciting for a subject matter expert. Perhaps less so for students. But AI is a so-called horizontal technology, meaning it will affect every employee in every industry in one way or another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that this technology must be used by self-employed people as well as employees of corporations, SMEs, but also by young (AI) startups holistic<\/a> But how can this be communicated equally well to everyone? And above all: How can we find what is me<\/em> important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To demonstrate the overall societal consequences of AI, practical examples or use cases are not sufficient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Without a individual knowledge transfer using AI<\/a> Actually, not at all. Or rather, not just about individual examples. Unfortunately, the repeatedly demanded \u201cpractical examples\u201d or \u201cuse cases\u201d are not enough to demonstrate the overall societal consequences of this technology. There are too many! And for each individual, different examples are relevant or, more importantly, truly comprehensible and adaptable. The synergies and possibilities are truly astonishing: Or who would have thought that a humanities scholar could already increase his own productivity by almost 10,000 percent<\/a> can increase?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see great potential here and want to close this gap with our course "AI and Responsible Entrepreneurship." At its core, it's about highlighting three inseparable pillars on which society is built: economy, environment, and culture. They are part of the metaphorical DNA of the social ecosystem of science, business, politics, and society, symbolized by the Quadruple helix<\/a>As ChatGPT itself states, cooperation is key here. The course presents current and diverse perspectives on AI and integrates different contributions and perspectives from (Munich) AI ecosystem partners. And always with an eye on corporate sustainability, the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030<\/a> and the limitations, opportunities and responsibilities in the development and use of AI applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And all without coding: Throughout the course, use cases and even self-trainable AI models will be covered, showing even non-coders that they too can train a machine. So don't worry. Use cases won't be neglected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding how startups are becoming the cornerstones of technological innovation and sustainable impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the course, you quickly learn that AI is not a "monolith," meaning a single "block of technology," but must be thought of in terms of many smaller application areas. And then it gets exciting when you can develop your own ideas about the diversity of AI application areas, and how these might relate to the other "DNA" building blocks of the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet there are many ideas. But who will ultimately implement and develop the many applications and niche products? Large corporations aren't always suited for this. Rather, it's the small, flexible parts of the so-called innovation ecosystem that can shine. They bring the necessary adaptability, a combination of persistence and determination, and the willingness to take even the most difficult paths. This form of resilience\u2014that is, resistance to all kinds of difficulties\u2014is wonderfully explained in the course by Andrew Goldstein, a member of the management team at German Entrepreneurship GmbH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For startups it is nothing new<\/a>that the very speed at which AI is developing represents a tremendous opportunity for them. Startups are the perfect vehicles to communicate how this technology will permeate society on a broad scale. Why? Because the multifaceted nature of the technology makes domain knowledge, or specialist expertise, relevant from all industries, be it manufacturing (robotics or predictive maintenance), research (exploratory AI), the arts and culture sector (generative AI), or education (personal AI coaches). And because startups can react quickly to emerging changes. This eliminates the need for complex change management due to a new AI strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just because something is technologically feasible is no justification for using it without restraint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can incorporate this technology into your own business model right from the start. This technology also makes many ideas marketable, i.e., scalable. And it also offers the opportunity to prepare for the fact that energy efficiency and sustainable structures will not be a luxury in the future, but a measurable (!) prerequisite for every company. Training AI models is particularly important. energy-intensive<\/a>Every text input as a prompt in ChatGPT or Midjourney requires energy, which is finite. Just because something is technologically feasible is no justification for its unrestrained use. Therefore, sustainability is often a basic requirement in government-supported programs, and we have consciously decided to UN Agenda 2030<\/a> with their Sustainable Development Goals with very concrete and measurable goals in focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporting on the achievement of sustainability goals is in place. And this idea of designing an AI model and its use in a transparent and energy-efficient manner from the outset, whether through high data quality instead of "big data," through the use of dedicated AI-optimized hardware, or even specific algorithms, will be taught in the "AI and Responsible Entrepreneurship" course and future learning offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These framework conditions should not be seen as a burden, but as an opportunity. The upcoming AI Act will also be a topic of discussion. This is a groundbreaking law that will have serious implications for every AI-based startup and product in the coming months and years. Few teams have understood the scope of these draft laws or considered the effects that extend beyond the EU to the US or China, and ultimately worldwide. All in all, this presents the perfect opportunity to consider sustainable concepts from the outset. The templates for this already exist, developed in other areas of the ecosystem. The SEA (Social Entrepreneurship Academy) of the SCE (Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship), for example, is making an important contribution here. And everyone can access these results here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And how exactly can one imagine the course \u201cAI and responsible entrepreneurship\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The course "AI and Responsible Entrepreneurship" is deliberately interactive and modular. This means that it is not just a series of lectures, but consists of sections of text, animations, diagrams, graphics, and even selected videos, which are integrated into specific situations to explain something. There is almost always the opportunity to delve deeper into a topic if you wish. It is therefore peppered with references and further content. Even workshop material and Canvas concepts are integrated. Thanks to several learning progress quizzes, you can also test your own understanding and quickly see whether you have truly understood what you have read, heard, or seen. All users are free to skip to the sections that interest them most. Furthermore, the course is constantly being revised and updated at regular intervals \u2013 after all, we have to keep pace with one of the fastest technological developments of our time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the near future, additional small modules will be created around the course: for example, a handy, interactive reference book for AI tools, use cases, and links to AI app search engines that will help you find the right AI tool or application for your needs. Some of these are already integrated into the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, we want this course to demonstrate the direction in which Munich's AI ecosystem is developing: a continuous collaboration between all willing partners, both to explore new paths together and to pave the way for others. Therefore, this course is and remains freely accessible to absolutely everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI+Munich project is primarily known for its government-funded prototype funding. Since March 2022, talented AI researchers and teams have been able to receive up to \u20ac25,000 in funding on their way to becoming a startup. But the program doesn't end with this funding: The aim is to create a strong AI ecosystem in Munich. There's no doubt that this already exists in Munich; the question is more how it will develop further. And the course is set for cooperation and sustainability through "trustworthy AI." Communicating this is one of the tasks of AI+Munich and the cross-university education team led by Dr. Fabian Heil, Educational Lead at MUC Summit GmbH. This is done, among other things, through the freely accessible online course on "AI and Responsible Entrepreneurship." The interactive course uses numerous examples to explain what artificial intelligence, sustainability, and entrepreneurial thinking mean and what they have in common.
