I'm a lawyer and have worked in the automotive industry for six years in various legal positions. My areas of expertise included data protection and autonomous driving. Then we have Bogdan "Bob" Bereczki (45). He's an aerospace engineer and also worked for a long time in product regulation in the automotive sector, where he helped develop and certify regulations; in the automotive sector, this is called homologation.

Sami Vaaraniemi (56) is a full-blooded software engineer. He studied computer science and helped set up the Azure Cloud at Microsoft, as well as working for other top-tier tech companies such as Skype, Citeo and Nokia.

And then we have Jörg Ulmer (38), who is also a software engineer and has worked at various companies in the software industry. (Photo: Certivity)

How did we get together? Bob and I know each other from our old jobs at Autonomous Intelligent Driving GmbH in Munich. I was in the legal department, Bob in product certification. That's where we met Sami, but only briefly, as we never had anything to do with each other professionally. When our company was ready and we had put out the first product ideas to tender, Bob and I initially started with another software developer. But we parted ways with him after a while. While looking for new software engineers and developers, we posted our job offer in a WhatsApp group with old AID employees. Sami then got in touch and took on the job as Co-Founder & Chief Software Officer.

At the same time, we met Jörg through an accelerator program we were participating in in Stuttgart, "Steyg Next." Jörg had participated there with Midiaid. When he heard we were looking for software support, he contacted us immediately.

“You have to incorporate all these vehicle regulations into the development process”

Munich Startup: What problem does your startup solve?

Nico Wägerle: We at Certivity develop an automotive RegTech solution, a software technology that supports compliance processes. The problem is that cars are highly regulated; more than 2,500 different vehicle regulations apply to them worldwide. And in the EU, a car must be certified before it even comes onto the market. This is called type approval or homologation. Therefore, the applicable vehicle regulations must be incorporated into the development process right from the start.

Furthermore, the regulatory world in the automotive sector is very international. The legislator for the largest market is the United Nations, with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It drafts vehicle regulations that are then applied in the European Union and many other countries. However, the United States and China, for example, have their own rules and legal systems that function somewhat differently.

So, when I develop something as an engineer, I first have to find out which regulations apply to the entire vehicle, my system, my components, or whatever I'm building. Then I have to extract the requirements from the product regulations and integrate them into the development process. And in the third step, you usually have to interpret them – if the regulations are perhaps ambiguous – together with a lawyer or a regulatory officer. That was my job, for example, and Bob's too; we worked very closely with the engineers.

Regulations change three or four times a year

Even after I've done all that, it's still possible that the regulations might change. This happens very often in automobiles, three to four times a year. Then I have to start all over again. This means that, as an engineer, I always have to be informed about changes. I have to check whether the regulations that apply to me are affected and, if I've made an interpretation based on the old regulations, perhaps make new ones.

Today, these entire process steps are still predominantly performed by humans and are therefore very manual, and there is no proper tool for them. And that's a problem because it's very labor-intensive and confronts engineers with tasks that don't require their core competencies as engineers. With Certivity, we're solving precisely this problem by building a software platform responsible for regulatory management, relieving engineers of a large portion of these tasks.

And these become significantly more complex as the systems in the vehicle become more complex. Currently, for example, a lot of software and electronics are being integrated into cars, such as automated emergency braking functions or lane keeping systems that keep the vehicle in lane using sensors and steering and braking interventions. Not only are the systems complex, but so are the regulations. Manual processes make this very difficult and very complex. That's why now is the right time for our solution. We are bringing a product to market that significantly reduces this complexity.

Certivity creates digital data models from regulations

Munich Startup: But that's been around for a long time!

Nico Wägerle: What is already being done today is much more expensive and complicated. We digitize regulatory content: We're turning what was previously available as a PDF into a digital data model, at the paragraph level. This allows us to add many attributes. This means that, unlike database providers, you no longer get a PDF from us, but rather regulatory elements from which you can assemble a regulatory model of a real product. Furthermore, our model can also be connected to other development tools and thus interact with them.

Let's take, for example, the development of an automated emergency braking system, which is mandatory in the European Union. If an obstacle is detected on the road and there is no braking intervention, the vehicle must be able to brake automatically. The technical regulations then regulate things like braking interventions, deceleration speeds, and so on. For such a system, I would now apply the set of requirements from the UN regulation to our platform. And because I also want to go to China, I also use the corresponding sets of requirements. I combine all of this into a regulatory system model that represents my product. If there are any changes to the regulations, we can feed this information directly into the model and possibly rework the product design. This way, we can keep the model permanently up to date with little effort for the engineer.

“We can keep the model permanently up-to-date with little effort”

Furthermore, we can base any queries or interpretations on the model or on a specific paragraph. For example, if a regulation requires a visual and audible warning signal when this system intervenes, an engineer will naturally wonder what exactly this means for implementation.

Using our platform, I can ask these questions and save the answer in a system model, in the paragraph where it belongs, and store it transparently for future reference. Previously, this was done via email, and the email usually ended up stuck in the inbox of my regulatory colleagues or the developer. And it's no longer really possible to trace how a particular interpretation came about.

Munich Startup: What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Nico Wägerle: Collaboration with automotive companies. Getting through the onboarding processes is definitely challenging. Especially as a young company that needs to build traction quickly. Often, we had to spend five to six months going through various processes for proof-of-concept contracts.

Munich Startup: Where do you want to be in one year? Where in five?

Nico Wägerle: We currently have several proof-of-concept customers we're working with, and more are practically in the sales pipeline. At the same time, we're developing the 1.0 version of our product. We aim to have it ready for rollout and the first recurring revenue in Q2 next year. We'd also like to close a financing round to ramp up the company.

In twelve months, we want to have repeat customers using our software.

Certivity already has other industries in mind

In five years, we want to integrate even more deeply into the automotive sector. Because with our regulatory model, once it's built, you can do a lot more. For example, you can also cover the proof of regulatory compliance. We also want to scale vertically with Certivity. We already have initial evidence that our concept is also interesting for other industries. That's why we definitely want to expand the areas in which we offer our product.

Munich Startup: How do you rate Munich as a startup location?

Nico Wägerle: I think Munich is great! We founded our company during the coronavirus pandemic; we're among those crazy people who actually quit a good job during the pandemic and venture into the unknown. But in Munich, with its cool infrastructure, we received fantastic support. For example, we're in contact with Baystartup and the Munich Urban Colab. We also won €36,000 from Start?Zuschuss! (Start?Grant!). I haven't heard of a program like this in my home state of Baden-Württemberg. We're now in Werk1, where we can rent office space at a very reasonable price. Plus, Munich is super lively with all the VCs. Something new pops up every day; it's just fun.

Munich Startup: Car or bike?

Nico Wägerle: We're definitely passionate about cars, given how many years we all have in automobiles between us.
