Seven questions, seven answers. Munich Startup talks today with Steffi, co-founder of mazel: <\/em>The anti-Tinder app, as she and her co-founders like to call it. With the app, the four-person team aims to revolutionize the dating market and find the right match for every pot, all in a playful way. mazel<\/em> participated as one of six teams in the BR format Startup Bavaria<\/a> part.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Why did you decide to apply to Startup Bavaria? What were your hopes for the opportunity?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was completely spontaneous that we filled out the application. We found the concept exciting and, from the very beginning, Andreas von Richter, one of the two coaches, very, very exciting. The fact that we were actually accepted, even though we had only just begun developing the product, was a huge surprise for us! Then it turned out that we were actually one of the startups being mentored and coached by Andreas, and we were very happy about that. We would never have applied for any of the other German startup formats currently airing on TV, but we really liked the documentary and real-time concept of Startup Bavaria, and so we filled out the application form and uploaded a video of Carl-Gustav, our unicorn. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

2. Have these hopes been fulfilled, or were Startup Bavaria and the coaches able to provide concrete help with your idea\/project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andreas has years of experience as the head of a large VC fund in Paris, and this is exactly the perspective we needed at this time. He gave us feedback on our pitch deck and the various Excel spreadsheets and financial plans, and that was exactly what we had hoped for from the coaching. Startup Bavaria was also a major experiment for BR, but I think, even though it was a bit bumpy at times, they are satisfied with it. We definitely don't regret being a part of Startup Bavaria, because the webisodes and interviews have led to further media inquiries, as reported by S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. What were the most helpful tips from your coach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can't go into too much detail here, but Andreas gave us very valuable feedback on our pitch deck. Sometimes, when you're deeply involved in the subject matter and it's difficult to maintain an objective, bird's-eye view of certain things, it helps immensely to have external feedback. Only then can you determine whether certain explanations, such as the problem statement or the solution approach that are part of the pitch deck, make sense and are understandable.<\/p>\n

4. What was the funniest experience while filming the show?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, things rarely work out the way you imagine on shoots like this. There were some funny moments. In Dublin, on the way from the hostel to the Web Summit, we boarded the wrong train with the camera crew. Then we couldn't get through the turnstiles because we didn't have a ticket for that station, so we had to sneakily hop over them with our equipment (including the pregnant author). Once we arrived at the Web Summit, we couldn't pair the Bluetooth mouse or keyboard with the Mac for quite a while because we couldn't activate Bluetooth on the Mac without a mouse. Luckily, Simon was able to fix that pretty quickly. Cameramen walking in front of you, backward, and then running into streetlights, people, or other obstacles are also not uncommon. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

5. Let's assume Startup Bavaria goes into a second round. In your opinion, are there any startups for which the format is particularly suitable?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, that's a good question. I personally think it's particularly exciting and helpful for very young startups that are still in the pre-product phase, depending on which coaches are provided. However, I think Startup Bavaria has thrived to some extent on the mix of different phases. OnPage.org initially focused on internationalization and was looking for a feel-good manager, which of course presents completely different problems to the ones we faced. For us, it was about somehow managing to make a test version of the app available as quickly as possible and then looking for investors, which is why we applied to be one of the Alpha Startups for the Websummit. OnPage.org had a huge booth at DMEXCO for this, which is a small difference, but it represents these different phases of a startup very well.<\/p>\n

6. What does Munich mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Munich means home to all four of us. All four of us are from Bavaria and studied here, with most of our social circles in Munich. With our previous startups, we were probably best off in Munich, as everything here revolved around the B2B sector and the Bavarian capital is a very strong economic region. Unfortunately, you read a little less about the Munich startup scene than about the Berlin scene, but that's also because Munich is home to many B2B startups, which tend to receive less media attention than traditional consumer or B2C startups. Nevertheless, Munich has always been a good starting point for us. We recently moved into the Friendsfactory on Sonnenstra\u00dfe and now finally have a slightly larger office than the one we're used to from Startup Bavaria. Twice the size, to be exact: until recently, we were still in a 12 sq m office on Nordendstra\u00dfe, and now we have a whopping 23 sq m. We don't know what to do with all the space. \ud83d\ude09 Despite all this, we've been toying with the idea of finding a new home for mazel for quite some time. That depends on which market turns out to be our main focus and, of course, also on future investors. For now, all we can say is: stay tuned. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

7. Either\u2026or question: Hiking or beer garden?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think the four of us could best agree on a combination: Hiking to a beer garden. \ud83d\ude09 Our old, small office was right next to the Max Emanuel beer garden, and we made extensive use of it last summer. Especially since we figured out relatively quickly that if we put our router outside on the windowsill, we could get Wi-Fi in the beer garden. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
