Munich Startup: <\/em>Who is behind the EIT Food Accelerator Network?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mira Sch\u00fctze, EIT Food<\/em>: The EIT Food Accelerator Network is backed by EIT Food, the leading European initiative making the nutrition, food, and agriculture sectors more transparent, healthier, and more sustainable. One way to prepare the sector for the future is to collaborate with and support startups. The EIT FAN (short for EIT Food Accelerator Network) is one of three flagship programs targeting impact startups in the seed phase. The EIT FAN is run simultaneously at six locations, each run by an EIT Food partner \u2013 in Munich, this is UnternehmerTUM, together with the Technical University of Munich. The other locations are Lausanne, Bilbao, Cambridge, Helsinki, and Haifa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em> Who is the accelerator and network aimed at?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mira Sch\u00fctze:<\/em> The accelerator is aimed at startups in the agtech, foodtech, and food sectors with a strong positive impact on the sector. Founders who offer solutions in these areas are a good fit for EIT Food and thus the accelerator: sustainable agriculture, sustainable aquaculture, alternative proteins, the circular economy, targeted nutrition, and digital traceability. It is important that the startups can already demonstrate initial success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the participating startups are only one part of EIT FAN \u2013 the other important factor is the network of companies, universities, and research institutions that seek collaboration opportunities with the startups. The focus is on access to industry and the potential associated market acceleration for the startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EIT Food Accelerator Network<\/strong> offers input, networking and resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em> What do you offer the startups in the program?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Mehner, UnternehmerTUM: <\/em>The four-month program consists of workshops, input sessions, and 1-on-1s with top experts from the startup scene. It covers all agrifood-specific and business topics that startups need to be ready for scale-up by the end of the program. These typically include sales, finance, team setup, and marketing. However, the program is individually tailored to the needs of the selected startups in each batch. We also value intensive exchange among the teams in the program, as experience has shown that they learn a great deal from each other, and their network, which extends beyond the program, is extremely valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second important component is mentoring and networking of the startups with potential customers, partners, investors, and other founders. What makes the EIT FAN special is the direct collaboration with strong partners from the industry. Current members of the EIT Food Accelerator Network in the Munich Hub include D\u00f6hler, John Deere, NX Food, Startlife, and DIL. In addition, we offer an extensive network of experienced founders and business experts who help the teams overcome their individual challenges during the program. With TUM, we also have a strong academic partner on board. In total, we assign up to three people to each team, who cover different topics and perspectives in mentoring. Now that the program is in its fourth year, we have worked with startups such as: Air Up<\/a> There are also very successful alumni who can support the new startups in the program in a mentoring role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a third component, the startups receive access to space and financial resources to further develop their product range, for example. The office and meeting rooms, as well as the UnternehmerTUM maker space, available to the startups, will be located in the brand-new Munich Urban Colab for the first time this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em> What makes the topics of food and agritech particularly interesting?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mira Sch\u00fctze:<\/em> The diversity of the industry and everyone's proximity to the topic of nutrition is a factor. Consumers are demanding more transparency with increasing urgency and punishing those who refuse with their purchasing decisions. Understanding of the need to feed a growing population and the unequal distribution of resources has grown. Another current influence is the unique effect on climate change caused by issues such as regenerative agriculture or political pressure such as the recently enacted Fertilizer Ordinance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orientation towards 'Sustainable Development Goals'<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em> What are the most exciting developments in this area at the moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mira Sch\u00fctze:<\/em> For the 2021 Accelerator, we are specifically seeking solutions in the areas of sustainable agriculture and healthy nutrition. The topics cover a broad spectrum and contribute to various SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), such as Zero Hunger. In the area of sustainable agriculture, this could include, for example, the development of solutions that improve biodiversity or animal welfare. In the area of healthy nutrition, this could include, for example, biotechnologies that enable the creation of alternative proteins. Innovations in these areas are particularly exciting for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich Startup:<\/em> How does the program fit into the other UnternehmerTUM offerings?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barbara Mehner:<\/em> As the largest center for startups and innovation in Europe, UnternehmerTUM is committed to finding solutions to societal challenges and developing individuals who make a difference. To this end, it offers a wide range of its own programs for innovators and founders in all phases of the innovation process, but also runs startup support programs for external partners, such as the Accelerator for EIT Food. Specifically, this is supported by Xpreneurs<\/a>, the high-tech incubator of the UnternehmerTUM. The startups in the EIT FAN program thus benefit from the UnternehmerTUM's many years of experience in startup coaching and its extensive network in the startup ecosystem. Furthermore, by joining the UnternehmerTUM, they gain insight into many other programs and funding opportunities. In the past, there have also been startups that completed the Xpreneurs program before the EIT Food accelerator, or that completed the Techfounders accelerator after their time in the EIT Food Accelerator Network. We are naturally delighted to be able to support startups over a longer period and follow their development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
