Comparison 2017-2020&quot; by the agency Gr\u00fcne Welle Kommunikation, green economy startups are placing less and less emphasis on professional product and corporate communications. While 75 percent of startups ranked this topic highly in 2017, this figure has now fallen to just 66 percent. Almost a tenth (9 percent) of respondents even stated that communication in general is of little importance to their company (2017: 4 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That the <a href=\"\/en\/61694\/startups-journalists\/\">communication<\/a> The fact that communication is losing importance is also reflected in the fact that only slightly more than half of respondents (52 percent) believe that startups should address the topic of professional communication when creating their own business plan. In 2017, the figure was 66 percent. For 12 percent, communication is more of a topic to be addressed later or when needed (2017: 9 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do green economy startups communicate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the startups in the study demonstrate a high affinity for digital communication channels. 98 percent of respondents have their own website as their most important tool, and the same number also use social media platforms. However, there are subtle differences: 59 percent have a permanent presence on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms, while 21 percent use these channels only &quot;occasionally.&quot; 19 percent use social media &quot;only rarely,&quot; and 2 percent are not active on them at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison, green startups have significantly less physical presence, for example at trade fairs and conferences (<em>Editor&#039;s note: The survey was conducted in the run-up to the Corona crisis<\/em>Only 16 percent of respondents stated that they attend such events &quot;permanently,&quot; while 40 percent attend them &quot;occasionally.&quot; Another 26 percent attend the events &quot;only rarely,&quot; and 19 percent avoid them altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running your own blog is currently a trend. Just over half of startups (51 percent) already have one, representing an increase of 20 percentage points compared to 2017. In addition, another 21 percent of respondents plan to launch their own blog in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green startups differentiate themselves from other startups in their communication less in the choice of tools than in the content: 72 percent (2017: 68 percent) of respondents explicitly address ecological aspects such as environmental protection, sustainability, energy efficiency, or climate compatibility. They then link these aspects to their offerings as solution providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The biggest obstacles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the green economy founders (70 percent) handle their startup&#039;s communications themselves. This figure was up from 66 percent in 2017. In contrast, only 21 percent of respondents have their own marketing or communications department (2017: 25 percent). For 2 percent of startups, the sales department also handles communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survey participants cited a lack of financial resources (72 percent) and the high internal time commitment (60 percent) as reasons for this. Over half (53 percent) also cited a lack of internal expertise as a barrier. However, 17 percent of respondents do not see a need for or positive effect of communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study is based on a survey of approximately 400 companies in the green startup scene in spring 2020. Data was collected anonymously via online questionnaire, largely in the run-up to the coronavirus crisis.
