Financing rounds, awards, exits \u2014 we regularly report on the successes of Munich startups. But what about the failures? After all, it is estimated that more than 80 percent of all startups fail in the first three years. Some even say that <\/strong>nine out of ten startups<\/strong><\/a> go bankrupt three years after their founding. Five examples from the Munich startup scene that didn't make it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things actually looked good for Leaf Republic for a while. With its biodegradable disposable plates made from leaves, the startup seemed to be capturing the zeitgeist. The media attention was certainly there, including its appearance on the startup and inventor show "Das Ding des Jahres" (The Thing of the Year) on ProSieben. But in autumn 2018, Leaf Republic filed for bankruptcy<\/a>The reason given in the insolvency register was "insolvency and excessive indebtedness." A refrigerator-sized greenhouse\u2014Agrilution had been working on bringing the "Plantcube" to market since 2013. In March 2019, the time had finally come. At the end of the same year, however, the Munich startup had to file for insolvency<\/a>Agrilution was ultimately saved by an acquisition by Miele. \"Lendstar
After just over five years, Lendstar closed in August 2018. The startup began as a pure P2P platform for friends to lend money to each other. Collaborations followed, including with Amazon and Zalando. During an appearance on the TV show "Die H\u00f6hle der L\u00f6wen," the company persuaded Jochen Schweizer to invest. Despite everything, the money ran out and an application for insolvency had to be filed<\/a>. However, it wasn't quite over, as Lendstar was eventually acquired by Epay. Everything actually looked very promising for the bicycle service provider Livecycle: Since its founding, the startup has experienced steady growth with its mobile bicycle service. However, after an initial investment round from a business angel and the bicycle wholesaler Messingschlager, the startup was unable to find additional investors for interim financing. A resulting liquidity shortage led Livecycle to file for insolvency proceedings under self-administration at the beginning of 2020. Nevertheless, Livecycle still has a future: The Govecs Group, a manufacturer of electric scooters, has taken over the bicycle service provider's business operations as part of an asset deal.<\/a> (Photo: pressfoto \/ Freepik)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Munich-based home-sharing startup Airgreets has been involved in the temporary rental of apartments since its founding in 2016. With its concept, it was able to convince investors in 2018<\/a>At the end of 2019, it was announced that the Munich-based startup was insolvent. But that wasn't the end of the Airgreets story, because in February 2020, it was announced that the home-sharing startup had been sold by the Morten Group.
