While many German startups are feeling the negative effects of the coronavirus crisis or even struggling to survive, healthcare startups are benefiting from the current situation. In a study, Strategy&, the strategy consultancy of PwC, has now quantified these effects and provided an outlook for future developments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Strategy&, 80 percent of digital healthcare startups in Germany report increased usage of their applications. Monthly user numbers for health and fitness applications have increased by an average of 16 percent since mid-March. The number of digital health and fitness app users has also reached a new high of 20.4 million. In the same period last year, only 17.6 million Germans used such services. The study suggests that this could be due to both the high public attention to health issues and the boom in digital applications in times of social distancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"COVID-19 is accelerating digitalization in medicine on an enormous scale. Patients and physicians are increasingly using virtual treatment options and recognizing their benefits. Therefore, digital solutions could establish themselves as a complement to traditional methods in the medium and long term. Digital healthcare startups have already demonstrated their resilience during the financial crisis, with only modest declines in funding. The current mood among the German startup scene confirms our forecast that spending on digital healthcare solutions will reach a market volume of around $40 billion in Germany alone by 2030."<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities and risks for healthcare startups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This development gives founders reason to look to the future with optimism. 82 percent of respondents see new business opportunities, and 72 percent anticipate increased investments in their own sector. 88 percent see the crisis-related increase in public awareness of digital offerings as the greatest medium-term growth opportunity. Since the current high utilization of the healthcare system is forcing German citizens to seek new access, many see health apps and similar solutions on the rise. 12 percent of respondents also explicitly mention new COVID-19-specific business areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, digital healthcare startups are also aware of the limiting factors of the crisis. 58 percent are concerned that Investors<\/a> Venture capital is withdrawing from risky projects. Furthermore, half of those surveyed fear that the funding agencies will become even more price-sensitive as a result of the crisis. Thomas Solbach explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"For digital healthcare startups, the COVID-19 pandemic could prove to be a decisive milestone in their development. To further accelerate certification processes and thus the launch of innovative products, collaborations between established healthcare companies, such as pharmaceutical companies, and startups are conceivable, combining many years of experience with innovative business ideas. This could make it possible to gradually reduce bureaucratic hurdles in dialogue with regulators. Given the current digital boom, the path to patient-centered digital medicine with a focus on prevention has rarely been as clear as it is today."<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
