Companies that fail to comply with the GDPR face hefty fines of up to \u20ac20 million, or up to four percent of their global annual turnover. To prevent this from happening, the Munich-based startup Heydata is helping companies comply with data protection regulations. We asked the founders Daniel Deutsch and Milo\u0161 Djurdjevi\u0107 our 7 questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>Who are you and what do you do? Please introduce yourselves briefly!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>We are Daniel Deutsch (29) and Milo\u0161 Djurdjevi\u0107 (30), and we met eight years ago while studying at the WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management. After successfully completing our Master&#039;s degrees at WHU and Warwick, we initially pursued different directions. Daniel first gained experience in consulting firms such as Deloitte &amp; Capgemini before founding his own company in the digital health sector and then moving on to <a href=\"\/en\/55317\/ottonova-60-million\/\">Ottonova<\/a> Milo\u0161 chose the typical path, taking initial experience at Rocket Internet, VC at Earlybird, and various ventures in the HV portfolio. In Munich, we then revisited the plan to found a company together, which had been in the works since our bachelor&#039;s degree, and after much deliberation, discussions, and iterations, we finally launched Heydata in March 2019. An exciting, completely independent company that presents us with new challenges every day and is simultaneously fulfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe at Heydata enable a quick and uncomplicated implementation of the GDPR into daily operations.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>What problem does your startup solve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>With the introduction of the GDPR, all European companies must achieve appropriate compliance. Since entrepreneurs naturally want to focus on their own business model, they often have little time or inclination to do so. Added to this is a lack of subject-matter knowledge, which constantly surrounds founders or managing directors with a sense of risk, especially in times when penalties are being imposed more frequently and with increasing severity. At Heydata, we enable quick and straightforward implementation of the GDPR into daily operations through digital processes and human expertise where necessary, freeing up entrepreneurs&#039; minds for other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>But that&#039;s been around for a long time!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>Because the GDPR only recently came into force, there aren&#039;t many solutions available yet for a cost-effective and straightforward implementation of the GDPR. Internal and external data protection officers are the most common solution, but current solutions are still very time-consuming and not very digital. We have digitized the process and developed a clear customer portal for our customers. This makes many processes easier to understand and alleviates customer concerns\u2014we want to create clarity, understanding, and time savings for both businesses and employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe number of new customers is constantly increasing\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>What have been your three biggest challenges so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>As a young provider in a young market, you first have to earn trust, especially in a highly fragmented market. That&#039;s why we considered customer satisfaction our most important goal from a very early stage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#039;s also been difficult to integrate all the characteristics of different companies, which are, of course, very different, into one product in such a way that a good user experience can be created without creating too much complexity. Ultimately, customers want to understand what they&#039;re getting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, building Heydata with our own resources was a challenge and a risk. We initially consciously decided against raising external funding. This meant many things had to be done manually, which we can now supplement with good tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>How are things going?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>The number of new customers is steadily increasing, and we are particularly pleased that customers actively recommend us, which shows us that we are a reliable partner for them. We ourselves were surprised that, despite the current market situation, a greater demand for data protection has emerged. However, for many companies, working from home, video conferencing, etc. are completely new territory, and this has created and continues to create awareness. Of course, this does not apply to the majority of the startup landscape. We already achieved profitability at the end of last year and are now using this to further develop our product. We also do not want to rule out new areas in the privacy segment in the B2C sector, as we see very exciting starting points there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>How do you rate Munich as a startup location?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>The proximity to many other startups and the large number of coworking spaces make it easier for us to network and acquire new customers, which is one of the reasons why we are so enthusiastic about Munich as a location. Especially since so many technology-driven startups are based here through the TU, knowledge exchange is very easy and offers exciting opportunities. Another factor, of course, is the small and medium-sized businesses and corporations that try to support young founders through their own initiatives. In our opinion, Munich has thus managed to establish probably the largest startup culture in the country after Berlin in a short period of time. Of course, Munich is also generally a very livable city \u2014 we think we are not the only ones who have really missed the beer garden culture and relaxed evenings on the Isar River over the past two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Munich Startup: <\/strong><\/em><strong>Risk or security?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Heydata: <\/em>Since we can achieve data protection compliance quickly, we naturally prefer the safe option. Early integration of data protection-compliant processes is particularly important, as otherwise, entire business models could ultimately be derailed if the issue is considered too late. For example, certain sales practices or tools might not be easily implemented. Replacing them could either incur high costs or negatively impact the initially good performance.
