Many cities are therefore introducing radical measures such as car-free city centers. In doing so, they are establishing new frameworks that often favor private transport. At the same time, citizens' demands for the highest possible level of mobility while maintaining flexibility are naturally increasing.

What are the benefits of new forms of mobility?

Dominik RadicTo guarantee this flexibility and sustainably reduce private transport, new forms of mobility such as car sharing and scooter sharing have been permitted, which have their own regulations for parking space use. Cities are investing in the expansion of station-based bike sharing services or mobility stations, thus opening up more and more areas. However, following the recent insolvency of several sharing services, there is a growing opinion that cities have not given sharing services the necessary priority.

Munich Startup: More and more people are living in cities. Can sharing concepts prevent traffic from collapsing?

Felix Harteneck: I think that private transport is changing and needs to be adapted to the challenges on the one hand and the needs of today's society on the other. Private transport will continue to play a very important role in the future. However, it's questionable whether everyone will be able to sit alone in their car, and whether everyone even needs to own a car anymore. I believe companies, in particular, have a responsibility to act. After all, 68 percent still commute to work by car—and often alone.

Munich Startup: Dominik, beyond Munich — which cities do you think demonstrate pioneering approaches to mobility?

Veomo founder Dominik Radic

Dominik Radic: The city of Hamburg is considered Smart City Index as a pioneer for mobility in Germany. A major driver of this is certainly the upcoming ITS Congress 2021 in Hamburg. In addition to the development of a real-time public transport platform and the bundling of alternative mobility services in mobility stations, there are also plans to establish a test track for autonomous vehicles in the city. Along with Hamburg, the city of Vienna is also very progressive. In recent years, the city of Vienna has consistently reduced the number of parking spaces, nearly doubled parking fees, and reduced the price of public transport (and introduced the €365 annual ticket).

Companies can drive the mobility transition

Munich Startup: How are companies and cities contributing to the mobility transition?

Felix Harteneck: Companies have a huge influence and can drive the mobility transition. That's for sure. To achieve this, it's important to provide employees with as many mobility options as possible. Why not share the commute with a colleague?

Not only that, but due to changes in the taxation of company vehicles, many company fleets will be electric in the medium term, and companies are therefore increasingly installing charging infrastructure in their parking lots. Companies can make these charging stations and parking spaces available to residents in the evenings and on weekends, thus alleviating the pressure on parking.

Dominik Radic: In my opinion, cities also bear a great deal of responsibility for the transport transition, but have often been left alone in the process. The transport infrastructure is drastically underfunded. Expanding the bicycle infrastructure would promote both cycling and the use of micro-mobility. Furthermore, public transport has already reached its limits. Discounting tickets would only exacerbate the problem of congestion. In order for new forms of mobility and the switch to alternatives to have any chance at all, major investments are required, which most cities cannot sustain on their own. If we look at cities where the transport transition is already at an advanced stage, we can see that it is a process that will take several years. We have not yet initiated this process in Germany.

Mobility will be shared, semi-autonomous and electric

Munich Startup: How will we travel in 2030?

Felix HarteneckShared, semi-autonomous, and electric. That's how I see the mobility of the future. 'Mobility on demand' will be even more prevalent, and private vehicle ownership will decline significantly. Instead of traveling using only one mode of transport, the proportion of intermodal travel will increase significantly. For example, parking the car in a Park & Ride parking lot and then taking a shuttle or e-scooter to work will increase. Compared to private cars, shared vehicles are used much more efficiently—both in terms of the number of passengers and daily use. I also see a lot of growth in the electromobility market. The market is already very dynamic, and there are many players with interesting solutions and concepts. A large proportion of newly registered cars will be electric. Even if not autonomous, we will at least be partially autonomous in 2030.

Munich Startup: So, the future will be about adapted mobility options. Will this mean that the car loses its importance as a status symbol?

Felix Harteneck: As the saying goes, the car is the German's favorite child. And that's certainly still very much the case today. However, we're already seeing a trend among the new generation toward sharing rather than owning. In the future, it's no longer about who drives the nicest and biggest car, but rather about finding the right form of mobility for current needs, getting from A to B quickly, comfortably, flexibly, and, above all, sustainably.

Digital platforms should simplify the transition to alternative mobility

Munich Startup: Dominik, in your opinion, which areas of action will become more important in the future when it comes to the future of our urban mobility?

Dominik Radic: Given the current challenges of congestion, emissions, and lack of space, we see many important areas for action. The biggest challenge lies in developing an integrated system that takes future technologies into account. To avoid the development of individual solutions and to save resources, framework conditions and collaboration are extremely important. We also need to simplify the transition to alternatives. We achieve this through digital platforms and the provision of interfaces. This will enable the creation of multimodal mobility platforms, which in turn create the basis for a simple and satisfying user experience.

Munich Startup: How can mobility be made climate-friendly and sustainable?

Felix Harteneck: It is important that policymakers, industry, and providers work together to develop solutions. The goal should be to encourage users to engage more fully in climate-friendly and connected mobility through modern, fair offerings. Urban mobility concepts must be made more sustainable and inclusive. In concrete terms, this means that all stakeholders must work together to develop solutions to avoid, shift, and improve traffic.

Harteneck: “Making urban mobility concepts more sustainable and inclusive”

Munich Startup: As mobility options change, so does the importance of parking space. How can existing parking space be used optimally?

Felix HarteneckParking space is an important component of existing and new buildings. For existing buildings, it is important to make optimal use of the available parking space. In the medium term, the existing parking space can be sublet to third parties and thus made available to residents, for example, on weekends or after work. Parking space will continue to play an important role for new buildings in the future.

However, optimal use can reduce the number of parking spaces required, thus saving money and space. At the same time, it is important that parking spaces are integrated into a holistic mobility concept from the outset and not forgotten in the mobility concept.

We are already aware of the importance of parking spaces. They can be key to integrating electric mobility and increasing carpooling. In the future, their importance will continue to grow as we integrate other forms of mobility.

Optimal use of (parking) space

Munich Startup: How can digital trends influence construction measures such as the construction of parking spaces?

Dominik Radic: The availability of alternative mobility services and digital services is significantly changing our mobility behavior. Since living space has become a scarce commodity in our cities, we as a society should consider how we can use parking space more efficiently and offer alternatives to private transport. Intelligent parking systems allow us to use parking spaces more efficiently and thus create space for sharing services, for example. Especially in new construction projects, we can reduce the parking space ratio and equip the building with future-oriented features by integrating digital systems.

Munich Startup: So, many changes are coming. What kind of sustainable mobility concept do you want to see for cities?

Felix Harteneck: For me, a desirable mobility concept includes accessibility to all forms of mobility for everyone. We will work with our partners to provide a platform for this in the future that unifies all mobility options. Therefore, we also support car-free zones and city centers. It is entirely conceivable that drivers will park and charge their cars in company parking lots on the outskirts of cities and then switch to alternative forms of mobility such as e-scooters or e-bikes to reach the city center.

Munich Startup: Thank you for the insights and the interview.

Mobility creates quality of life.
