The study "The State of European Tech" sheds light on the European startup scene and shows significant progress in financing young technology companies. However, there is still room to catch up on another issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the startup conference Slush in Helsinki, the current edition of the startup report \u201cThe State of European Tech<\/a>The results show that the startup scene in Europe is still on the right track. 30 billion US dollars will flow into European tech companies this year. Compared to the previous year<\/a> This represents an increase of around one-fifth. German startups were even able to increase their inflows by a quarter, to 6 billion US dollars in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Wehmeier<\/strong>, author of the report and partner and Head of Insights at Atomico, says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"The European tech scene remains a bright spot in the global economy, despite this year's media focus on turmoil in the market and the tech industry. Europe's economy may not be immune, but European technology companies continued to break records over the past twelve months."<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

London leads the ranking of European startup hotspots with \u20ac8.2 billion in invested capital. Berlin follows in second place, followed by Stockholm and Paris. Munich-based tech companies secured over \u20ac1 billion in 2019. This places the Bavarian capital fifth among all European startup locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catching up on the proportion of women<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As in the previous year, the report criticizes the low proportion of women in the European startup scene. This year, 92 percent of investments go to exclusively male founding teams. Last year, this figure was almost the same at 93 percent. Another finding is thought-provoking: In the first nine months of this year, 215 startups raised more than $10 million. Among the 119 chief technology officers of these companies, there is only one woman. Among software developers, in contrast, the proportion of women is 7.5 percent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A look at the gender distribution in engineering and technology programs at the world's top 100 universities shows that Germany's top universities are relatively well positioned in this regard. The top three universities with the highest proportion of women in these disciplines are located in Germany: At the Technical University of Dresden, 42 percent of students in engineering and technology programs are female, while at the Technical University of Munich and the Technical University of Berlin, the figure is 34 percent each. KTH in Stockholm and ETH Zurich follow closely behind in fourth and fifth place. Wehmeier says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"European tech companies are now performing at levels many considered impossible when we first published our report five years ago. There's a broad talent pool, over 150 European unicorns, and institutional investors continue to invest record amounts. And yet, despite some small progress, a huge diversity gap remains."<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
