That could change now. At least, if Buzzard&#039;s current crowdfunding campaign is successful. In this interview, you&#039;ll learn why the two founders and journalists Felix Friedrich and Dario Nassal are raising \u20ac250,000 and which three tips you can use to take a step out of your filter bubble right now. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Munich Startup: Felix and Dario, we have been following your work at Buzzard for some time. Now you have a fresh start combined with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Crowdfunding campaign (opens in new tab)\">Crowdfunding campaign<\/a> announced. What exactly are you planning?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buzzard: From the beginning we <a href=\"\/en\/31122\/portrait-thebuzzard-picter-media-lab\/\">Buzzard<\/a> We started because we have a big vision. And we&#039;re still pursuing this vision: We want Buzzard to become the largest platform for political perspectives in Europe and contribute to a world where people have more understanding for one another. In a time when hate and incitement have become part of everyday life, when parts of society are becoming increasingly radicalized, our vision is becoming ever more important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#039;s become clear to us: If we want to combat hate and incitement, Buzzard, as it currently stands, isn&#039;t enough. If we really want to make a difference, we need to think bigger; we need to create a new perspective on the news world, a digital tool that enables a new way of consuming media in everyday life. An app that illuminates perspectives across the entire spectrum of opinion and brings people of different views back into conversation with each other \u2013 but without requiring people to invest extra time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe app is fully developed, we are ready to go\u201d <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s why we&#039;ve developed a new concept. An app and online platform that&#039;s not an extra, not an add-on, but rather makes reading the news daily a better experience. With the new Buzzard, you can follow the day&#039;s top topics and find perspectives on these top topics that make you feel: Wow, I&#039;ve never seen it like this before! You get an overview every day and can constantly broaden your horizons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The app is fully developed, and we&#039;re ready to go. But now it&#039;s all about the big picture: We can only launch the medium and publish articles daily in an editorial office if funding is secured for a year. Therefore, the big and all-important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Crowdfunding (opens in new tab)\">Crowdfunding<\/a>If we fail, it will be the end of Buzzard. If we can get 4,500 founding members together, a whole new perspective on the news world will become possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To escape filter bubbles and algorithms, you want to rely on the &quot;crowd&quot; for content curation in the future \u2013 how exactly will that work? And who exactly is the &quot;crowd&quot;?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crowd are our founding members. With Buzzard, we are launching a movement for a new, transparent and participatory journalism. Members are a fundamental part of this movement. They can have a say in setting topics and choosing perspectives, selection criteria, and research, and contribute. In times when algorithms often select the content we see in our news feeds, with Buzzard we are consciously focusing on recommendations from people for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which content and sources are taken into account in the selection?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Buzzard, we feature media from the entire spectrum of opinions, including national and international sources, as well as magazines, blogs, and academic publications. This is what makes Buzzard special: users get an overview of the entire spectrum of opinions online and can access information openly and unbiasedly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Representative voices from all social groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For each topic, we explore the various positions and arguments being discussed in society on this issue. For each position, we present representative voices from the respective social camps. For example, if we cover Trump&#039;s America, we present the voices of conservative Americans as well as the voices of progressives and leftists who oppose the president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are also limits. Hateful and inflammatory comments, as well as racist, homophobic, and misogynistic statements, have no place on Buzzard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We provide users with summaries for each source and show who is behind each perspective. This way, users are quickly well-informed and also familiar with the perspectives of people who are part of other bubbles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And will the name \u201cThe Buzzard\u201d remain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buzzard is the English word for buzzard. The bird that keeps track of things. And also one of the fastest birds in the world. This name still fits our project perfectly, because that&#039;s exactly what we want to offer our founding members: a bird&#039;s eye view of politics and, at the same time, precise information, fast and to the point. That&#039;s why we&#039;ve stuck with the name. However, we&#039;ve decided to drop the &quot;The.&quot; From now on, The Buzzard will be called Buzzard. It&#039;s even faster, even easier to remember, and even more to the point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 tips for getting out of your own filter bubble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your goal is to raise 250,000 euros with the current crowdfunding campaign. What exactly do you plan to do with the money, and what are you offering your supporters in return?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming campaign is not a classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Crowdfunding campaign (opens in new tab)\">Crowdfunding campaign<\/a>This isn&#039;t a member-funded campaign. This means that anyone who supports the project for \u20ac5 a month becomes a founding member, receives full access to the new platform and app, can read all of our content every day, participate in discussions, vote on topics, and help shape this new form of journalism. This money will finance a professional daily editorial team for a year to staff the app, as well as provide a budget for development, design, and marketing. We will make all expenses transparent for founding members on the new homepage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Perhaps, finally, three tips on how we can now \u2013 until your solution is launched \u2013 get out of our filter bubbles from time to time? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First tip:<\/strong> Read proactively. Consciously set aside time once a day to proactively inform yourself about world events, rather than just reading what pops up in your feed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Second tip<\/strong>: Question your own media mix. Look at the sources you use daily and ask yourself: What kind of newspapers, programs, and magazines are they? Do you notice that there are certain positions that are often represented in these media? Then consciously seek out media that represent different opinions to these positions and include them in your media mix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Third tip:<\/strong> If you&#039;re interested in a topic, look for at least two different articles on it and compare them. Make this a habit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you can only follow these three tips if you have enough time in your day.
