The Munich-based medtech startup Smart4Diagnostics (S4DX) aims to digitize the blood collection process. The healthcare company hopes to ensure seamless tracking of blood samples. In July 2018, the Munich-based company convinced investor EIT Health and successfully completed a \u20ac2 million financing round. 7 questions for Timo B\u00f6ge<\/strong>, one of the four founders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Who are you and what do you do? Please introduce yourselves briefly! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our startup<\/a> is working on a digital solution to support the blood collection process and seamlessly record and ensure the quality of the blood sample right up to laboratory analysis. While laboratory analyzers have been technically advanced over the decades into powerful precision machines, the blood sample being analyzed, and thus the basis for over 70% of all medical decisions, has long been neglected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart4Diagnostics<\/strong>: \u201cWe come with a problem from practice\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our founding team didn't emerge from academia with a technology; we came with a practical problem. In our previous careers in the laboratory and hospital, we identified a quality issue in handling blood samples, but couldn't find a practical, contemporary solution on the market. Therefore, we decided to develop a solution. Together, we\u2014Julia Fl\u00f6totto, Hans Maria He\u00ffn, Malte Dancker, and I, Timo B\u00f6ge\u2014bring practical experience in software development, laboratory medicine, regulatory affairs, and hospitals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

2. But that's been around for a long time!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That's right. Various components of our solution have actually been around for decades, such as temperature loggers for transport monitoring. However, no one has yet considered a fully automated, digital, and integrated solution that involves the patient and nurse and supports the process. Until now, many steps, from blood collection to the sample's arrival in the lab, have been performed and documented manually and to the best of our knowledge and belief\u2014or not at all, because things have been done differently for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart4Diagnostics isn't reinventing the wheel. However, we support the nurse and the entire process selectively with our digital solution, where we've identified a need based on our own experience and validation discussions. We don't try to force a new technology into an existing format. We try to fill the existing format with the appropriate technological solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recruitment: A real challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

4. What has been your biggest challenge so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite our proximity to the university, accessing young and ambitious graduates is a challenge. We can't compete with the offerings and reputation of established and prominent employers in Munich. At the same time, in our experience, the employer expectations of local graduates don't necessarily match the opportunities available at a startup. Furthermore, automotive, robotics, and artificial intelligence are more attractive in Munich than healthcare. This makes recruiting for Smart4Diagnostics a real challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Let\u2019s get down to business: How is business going? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are currently still in the product development and validation phase, where we want to tailor our prototypes for market launch. If the product and business model are right, we are confident that sales will follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since we operate in the B2B business, a lot of things go under the radar. We currently have partnerships with various heavyweights in the laboratory market, from manufacturers to laboratory service providers, and are also talking to potential customers in Europe. Our successful financing rounds are giving us momentum, but of course, they also increase our burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. What does Munich mean to you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Munich is our startup's adopted home, and we commute daily from Upper Bavaria to the city. With all the advantages and disadvantages of commuting, we ultimately chose the proximity to the Technical University of Munich, the Rechts der Isar Hospital, and the entire Munich innovation network, including the local startup scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.<\/strong><\/em> 60s or Bavaria? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
