The Munich startup M-Bee<\/a> develops and sells modular inverters for high-performance battery storage systems. Find out what advantages the M-Bee system offers compared to existing solutions and what challenges the four founders face in our 7 questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Who are you and what do you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The founding team of M-Bee consists of four people: Christoph Dietrich (27), Arthur Singer (32), Martin Sprehe (31) and Nam Truong (31).<\/p>\n

Christoph completed his master's degree in technology management at the Technical University of Munich, specializing in market strategy and organizational development with a minor in energy technology. Arthur earned his doctorate from the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, working on modular power electronics for battery storage systems, which serves as the basis for M-Bee. He also earned his MBA from the Coll\u00e8ge des Ingenieurs. Martin completed his master's degree in electrical engineering at the Osnabr\u00fcck University of Applied Sciences and worked for several years on Arthur's research project. Nam earned his doctorate from the Technical University of Munich, working on the evaluation and optimization of stationary battery storage systems.<\/p>\n

Arthur and Martin met during a research project on M-Bee technology and became friends over time. Towards the end of the research project, both pursued the idea of a spin-off company based on power electronics. Arthur has known Nam since the second day of their electrical engineering studies (2007) and simply asked him when looking for additional founding members. Christoph joined the team as the last founding member and knew Nam from their time together at the student consulting firm Academy Consult.<\/p>\n

The team is developing a novel inverter for industrial-scale battery storage and electromobility. It changes the fundamental design of the storage system and opens up numerous technical advantages. The storage system operates at low, safe voltages, increases usable battery capacity by approximately 5 percent, makes the storage system fail-safe, and reduces energy losses by 70 percent.<\/p>\n

2. But that has been around for a long time!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inverters for converting battery voltage into the required form for the power grid or electric motor already exist, but they are expensive and require lethal voltages of more than 400 volts\u2014at the high power levels we're targeting. Our technology enables safe battery handling and reduces storage costs by an estimated 20 percent.<\/p>\n

The system offers several other technical advantages that have attracted great interest in numerous discussions with potential customers.<\/p>\n

3. What has been your biggest challenge so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aside from technological development, it's probably the transformation of our highly technical description of technology into a more understandable form. Although we're not always sure whether we've succeeded.<\/p>\n

4. Let\u2019s get down to business: How is business going? <\/strong><\/p>\n

We are fully funded through the German government's EXIST research transfer program until the end of March 2020, and our goal is to develop a near-product prototype by then. In April 2019, we will build an initial demonstration system for a pilot customer, proving that our technology also works outside the laboratory.<\/p>\n

In addition to receiving written purchase orders\u2014which, in total, correspond to seven-figure sales\u2014we have participated in business plan competitions with some success. We took second place in the 2018 TUM IdeAward, were named among the top 10 startups at the annual reception of the German Renewable Energy Association, were selected as one of the 10 winners in Phase I of Baystartup's Munich Business Plan Competition, were invited by Science4Life as one of the top 20 startups to a two-day coaching seminar in Berlin, and were among the 10 finalists from 222 applications worldwide at Innoenergy's Global Call for Electrical Energy Storage Startups, which allowed us to pitch in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n

5. What does Munich mean to you? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Munich offers an incredibly good environment for B2B startups in the industrial sector. The highly educated students, the proximity to partners, investors, and other founders, as well as the excellent quality of life in the city itself, naturally make it a very attractive location. Unfortunately, this also exacerbates the "war for talent." But we are convinced that new team members will be eager to take on the challenges and contribute to a sustainable future.<\/p>\n

Three of us naturally associate Munich with our time at university, during which we were able to experience and learn a great deal. Our fourth man shares the view that good beer is also an important factor.<\/p>\n

6. How will your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we see you soon at Epic Fail Night?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We've come to the right place, as the battery storage market is currently growing exponentially. With our new and patented technology and a smart business strategy, we hope to win over our customers and set the new standard for battery storage. If not, we can at least tell you about our adventure on stage (back when we were still young...).<\/p>\n
