The Munich-based mobility startup Cluno offers car ownership through a subscription model, bookable via an app. Behind the young company are the three experienced founders Nico and Christina Polleti, along with Andreas Schuierer, who previously successfully founded Easyautosale. Nico Polleti answered our seven questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Who are you and what do you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cluno<\/a> offers car ownership through a subscription model\u2014a revolutionary way to drive your own car without buying it. In just three minutes, you can book your own car via the app for a monthly all-inclusive package price, which will then be delivered to your desired location.<\/p>\n

My name is Nico Polleti, 37 years old and a graduate in automotive business administration. I started my career at Porsche in 2004 and, after just four years, became the youngest managing director of a Porsche Center in Germany. I founded my first company\u2014a car detailing business\u2014in 1999, at the age of 18.<\/p>\n

The Cluno co-founders are my wife Christina Polleti, a business graduate, and Andreas Schuierer, a graduate engineer. Before Cluno, the three of us had already founded a startup together: Easyautosale (EAS). The company absolutely captured the spirit of the times by simplifying the complex process of buying and selling used cars. In 2016, EAS was successfully sold to Scout24.<\/p>\n

With Cluno you can have your car delivered to your desired location via subscription<\/h3>\n

2. But that's been around for a long time!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, we've been live with our concept since October 2017. Before the car subscription, the only options were to buy or lease\u2014both of which were very long-term and not very flexible. What's special about Cluno is that it's not just access to your own car that's possible digitally via an app. With Cluno, we want to digitize the entire experience surrounding your own vehicle. We're currently the only ones who see this happening with us.<\/p>\n

Since the minimum term and notice period are only six and three months per vehicle, respectively, there's no long-term commitment, unlike purchasing, financing, leasing, or other options. Furthermore, the all-inclusive price makes costs transparent and easy to plan. You don't have to worry about anything, like car repairs or tire changes.<\/p>\n

3. What are the three main ingredients for your recipe for success?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What's important is the right idea at the right time and a great team. Overall, our success is based on three components: a highly motivated team, a clear and consistent focus, and good timing.<\/p>\n

4. Let\u2019s get down to business: How is business going?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So good that in a year we will have a 36 million dollars in funding <\/a>from well-known VCs such as Valar Ventures, Acton Capital<\/a> and Atlantic Labs.<\/p>\n

We have 55 employees and a 1,200 square meter office. Since October 2018, we've recorded 10,000 app downloads. We're growing rapidly in all areas: We now have 50 different car models from ten different brands and numerous partnerships with dealers and car manufacturers. Our customers come from all over Germany\u2014from Garmisch to Flensburg\u2014and are between 23 and 76 years old.<\/p>\n

5. What does Munich mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Munich is a great location for us. We have already successfully built Easyautosale here. Because Munich is traditionally home to OEMs (Editor's note: Original Equipment Manufacturer, i.e. supplier<\/em>) are strongly represented, the city is simply ideal for our mobility and fintech startup.<\/p>\n

Munich has a good infrastructure and a wealth of talent, which is important when recruiting employees to drive growth. We're originally from Lower Bavaria, and Munich is our adopted home. Munich has a great atmosphere, and you meet a lot of good people there.<\/p>\n

6. How will your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we see you soon at Epic Fail Night?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We'll become a unicorn by pursuing our vision with the same consistency and commitment as before, and by remaining excellent in execution. Automotive experts agree that the car subscription is the promising new form of mobility. As a brand-independent and digitally driven startup, we can offer an attractive and comprehensive package and provide a modern customer experience. Car manufacturers are also interested in our model, as our recent collaboration with Porsche demonstrates. So, no, I don't think we'll see each other at Epic Fail Night.<\/p>\n

7. Hiking or beer garden?<\/strong><\/p>\n
