{"id":40638,"date":"2018-09-28T15:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.munich-startup.net\/?p=40638"},"modified":"2020-10-08T10:41:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T08:41:49","slug":"interview-dr-bieberbach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.munich-startup.net\/en\/40638\/interview-dr-bieberbach\/","title":{"rendered":"How Munich&#039;s municipal utilities cooperate with startups: Interview with SWM CEO Dr. Bieberbach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><p><strong>We spoke with Dr. Florian Bieberbach, Managing Director of Stadtwerke M\u00fcnchen (SWM), about Munich&#039;s startup landscape and how the municipal utilities are already working with startups to drive innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Bieberbach, what are the most important future topics that SWM is currently dealing with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our major business areas of energy supply, communications, and mobility are, taken together, themes of the future. I see this as both a stroke of luck and a challenge. Fundamental changes are occurring in all three areas that are transforming and complementing the value chains. Electromobility, autonomous driving, sector integration, smart homes, connectivity, and IoT, as well as intelligent grid management, each with its many detailed topics, are just a few of the fields relevant to us. For us, this means we must adapt our business models and redefine our relationships with our customers. Consequently, it also means changes in the understanding of how we position ourselves as a company and the leadership culture we embrace.<\/p>\n<p>Climate-neutral energy supply remains a core issue for us, as we&#039;ve been working on the energy transition for 10 years. But its implementation, with its many details, will keep us busy for many years to come, as can be seen, for example, in the expansion of geothermal energy for Munich&#039;s climate-friendly district heating supply.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cServices of general interest go digital\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Digitalization as a driver of effectiveness and efficiency, as well as the diverse technological advances, play a major role for us. Examples include data analytics, artificial intelligence, and AR. We are already benefiting from new digital solutions in many areas, such as maintenance. Our LoRa network lays the foundation for a wide variety of applications in the field of connectivity. And by developing service-on-demand offerings, we are complementing the city&#039;s mobility offerings.<\/p>\n<p>However, SWM also thinks outside the box and works together within the framework of various partnerships and projects both in the municipal environment and with industrial partners.<\/p>\n<p>We are currently experiencing a very challenging and exciting time, which can be summarized as \u201cpublic services go digital.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>There is still a lot of potential in cooperation with startups<\/h3>\n<p><strong>What role do startups play in these issues? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#039;m delighted that collaboration with startups is becoming increasingly commonplace for us. It&#039;s a classic win-win situation with benefits for both us as an established company and the startups: Startups help us expand our portfolio. They can tackle and implement topics that we either haven&#039;t yet addressed or haven&#039;t recognized\u2014or for which we simply haven&#039;t had the time\u2014more quickly. In return, we offer them the opportunity to actively shape the future within the framework of new concepts in a model international metropolis.<\/p>\n<p>But our innovative strength also comes from within our own ranks. We have great employees with excellent technical expertise and a great deal of curiosity. When that combines with the &quot;startup spirit,&quot; it&#039;s naturally perfect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you already work with startups? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We work with startups in some areas and have had positive experiences so far. We still have a lot of potential here. Working with a startup is also something we need to learn. We certainly still have room to develop in this area. But in this respect, we&#039;re probably no different from many other companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this work actually look like? What are the responsibilities, obligations, and freedoms? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#039;s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It varies from topic to topic and depends on both our respective objectives and the startups&#039; ideas. Our goal is to create an environment that enables the successful implementation of a project for both parties.<\/p>\n<h3>The SWM door is open to startups<\/h3>\n<p><strong>How does a startup approach SWM if it thinks a collaboration might be interesting? Is there already a dedicated startup program or specific contacts, perhaps even scouts looking for startups? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first point of contact for startups is SWM Innovation Management. This department works closely with &quot;New Business,&quot; a department dedicated exclusively to new business models and always on the lookout for good ideas. We also participate in startup events and trade fairs. We want to demonstrate: &quot;<em>We are open and we are interested in good cooperation \u2013 contact us!<\/em>\u201cWe are also active in the very early idea phases: We work closely with universities and innovation centers to support and promote good ideas.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cAs a location for innovation, Munich has long since outgrown its infancy\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><strong>What does a startup need to bring to the table for SWM to be interested in a collaboration?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, of course, we need an interesting technology, service, or product that fits into or complements our portfolio. We do not seek collaboration outside of our existing business areas. Furthermore, the startup should share our values. We are a sustainable company in many respects. We have strong regional roots and take responsibility for Munich and the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you rate Munich as a startup location? Where do you think there might still be room for improvement or catching up? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a center of innovation, Munich has long since outgrown its infancy and continues to grow in attractiveness. We have industrial companies that are global market leaders in their fields and a solid SME sector. We have several excellent universities that are active in research and nurture young talent. We have a number of local patrons who are committed to the city and its future viability.
