The Munich Business Plan Competition (MBPW) entered its 20th round this year. As one of the initiators of the competition, Dr. Lothar Stein has been involved from the very beginning. In an interview with BayStartUP<\/a> He explains why the competition was launched, what the initiative has achieved and how he assesses the startup scene in the Munich startup region today.<\/p>\n

Dr. Stein, you have been driving startup support at McKinsey since the mid-1990s and were instrumental in initiating the first Munich Business Plan Competition in 1996. How do you look back today?<\/h3>\n

Dr. Lothar Stein: The Munich Business Plan Competition (MBPW), now BayStartUP, is awarding its winners for the twentieth time this year. This is a tremendous success story, to which the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the City of Munich, Munich universities, numerous industrial companies, and many dedicated individuals have contributed.<\/p>\n

How did you come up with the idea?
\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The beginning in 1995 was much more difficult than one might imagine today. At that time, I had lived in Silicon Valley for several years and worked in the McKinsey office there. I was impressed by the startup scene and the important role played by universities, especially Stanford and Berkeley. Back in Munich, I became drastically aware of the complete lack of a startup culture here in Germany.
\nTogether with some McKinsey colleagues, we considered how we could contribute to improving the situation through a pro bono project. Inspired by student initiatives in Boston, we then developed the concept for a business plan competition for regions in Germany.<\/p>\n

What was crucial about the concept for the first business plan competition in Germany?<\/h3>\n

The core elements of the competition were: support from key political institutions, universities, and students as a source of ideas and founding teams, networking with venture capital firms and support services, and industrial companies as financial sponsors. Furthermore, the business plan competition was intended to offer participants the opportunity to gradually acquire all the knowledge necessary for a successful start-up through participation in the competition, with seminars and manuals. At the time, this knowledge was virtually nonexistent or difficult to access.<\/p>\n

How did the first competitive season 1996\/97 go and what happened next?<\/h3>\n

This success prompted the Ministry of Economic Affairs to commission McKinsey to initiate a similar competition in Northern Bavaria and to institutionalize both competitions. Since then, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has continuously supported both competitions and merged them into BayStartUP last year. The business plan competitions have undergone significant development over the past two decades, both in terms of their organization, content, and participants.<\/p>\n

Today, the Munich Business Plan Competition has well over 200 participating teams each year. The teams come from all regions of southern Bavaria and no longer primarily directly from universities. There are also some participants with multiple startup or professional experience. Another important element that has grown over the past five years is the pan-Bavarian Business Angel Network, through which a total of almost \u20ac38 million in funding was secured for 49 startups last year.<\/p>\n

How do you assess Munich\u2019s current situation as a startup location?<\/h3>\n

With the many high-tech startups founded in recent years, a startup scene has developed in the Munich area. There are topic-specific accelerators, for example, for aerospace or media. Networking among startups for the exchange of experience and employee development is also encouraged.
\nFurther development has increased significantly. Furthermore, the collaboration with established companies, so crucial for startups, is beginning to improve. However, the willingness of established companies to respond to the needs of startups still needs to develop significantly to reach the level common in the US.<\/p>\n

And especially the capital market?
\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In terms of financing, the business angel scene, which is very important for initial financing and coaching founders, has developed very positively. Today, with over 240 listed business angels in the BayStartUP financing network, we have significantly more active angels than we did 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the VC scene hasn't developed nearly as dynamically; we still have a lot of catching up to do in Germany, especially with regard to the legal and tax framework.<\/p>\n

Overall, the Munich region has increasingly developed into a globally recognized hub for technology-based startups and occupies a leading position throughout Europe.
