Bits & Pretzels has always been a place where tradition meets modernity, and nothing illustrates this more than the numerous traditional costumes on display at the startup festival. The welcome by moderator Florian Akinbiyi, supported this year by Lara Sofie Bothur, has also become a tradition. And the T-shirt cannon has also become an integral part of the festival. But after the welcoming remarks by State Secretary for Economic Affairs Tobias Ulrich Gotthard, the event departed from its usual routine. While in previous years, visitors could look forward to prominent guests such as Oliver Kahn and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who opened Bits & Pretzels with a bang, things were different this year. In fact, the event, which is also known for attracting celebrities such as Michelle Obama and Barack Obama to Munich, is completely omitting any outside names from the industry on its speaker list this year. Instead, Bits founders Bernd Storm, Andreas Bruckschl\u00f6gl, and Felix Haas took the time to kick off their event by talking about this year's Bits & Pretzels motto: "Kickstart Europe." Their goal for the next three days, the three explained, is not only to demonstrate how great the European startup ecosystem already is, but also to unlock further potential and "send a wave of energy through Europe." To illustrate this, they invited representatives from Estonia, France, and Bulgaria \u2013 three of this year's twelve country partners \u2013 to the stage. Afterwards, three startups (Kiud from Estonia, Evrotrust from Bulgaria, and Faircado from Berlin) were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the conference attendees. The founders also explained further changes to the Bits concept: Two additional events will take place on the second day of the conference, intended to attract more guests to the Munich trade fair. The Investor Summit brings together around 1,500 investors, and the CXO Summit brings around 300 corporates and medium-sized businesses to Bits & Pretzels \u2013 more than ever before. And the audience is also larger than ever: After the targeted 5,000 tickets were sold out seven weeks before the event, the organizers decided to increase the limit to 7,500 participants \u2013 from a total of 70 countries, as the organizers emphasize. As in previous years, the Startup Expo 2024 will be split across both conference days, meaning different startups will exhibit on Sunday and Monday. A total of over 200 young companies will enjoy their own booth. Many of the exhibiting startups will also participate in the Bits pitch competition. There have also been changes here this year: Under the title "European Pitch Contest," startups from over 30 European countries will compete for the trophy. However, the competition itself remains the same: During the two days of the fair, the startups will compete against each other in topic-specific semifinals. Of course, you'll also find Munich Startup at the exhibition: We'll be welcoming you to our lounge together with Munich Business, the economic development agency of the City of Munich. Various experts from the startup ecosystem will provide insights and tips and be available to answer your questions. On the second day of the fair, you can also expect presentations on topics such as startup financing, impact startups, and social entrepreneurship, as well as founding and startup support. And we've even got a competition: Spin our wheel of fortune and win ice cream from the crazy ice cream maker or even a beer token for the Schottenhamel beer hall. In addition to the main stage, Bits & Pretzels will once again feature several side stages this year, where attendees can learn about a wide variety of topics. The so-called "Money Pit Stage," for example, will focus on proven financing and financial strategies. Industry experts will share innovative financing strategies and provide insights into current economic trends. Successful scaleups will share their success stories and answer the questions of those who want to replicate them. Take Aron Gelbard of Bloom & Wild (pictured). In his presentation, he explained how the British floristry startup not only successfully expanded its portfolio \u2013 in addition to flowers, it also supplies a wide variety of gift items \u2013 but also conquered additional markets, including Germany and France, through organic growth and acquisitions. The big players of the future can, of course, be found on every corner at Bits & Pretzels \u2013 but they concentrate their expertise on the "Soonicorn & Zebras Stage." The stage highlights the most important trending topics, including deeptech, greentech, and, of course, AI. The panel on artificial intelligence exemplifies the structure of the discussions: moderated by an industry expert (pictured here on the left is Frizzi Engler-Hamm, CEO of the Munich Innovation Ecosystem), founders speak on an equal footing. In this case, Isabel Poppek, CEO and Founder of Alpas, Khaleeq Aziz, Founder & CEO of Genaios, and Max Fischer, Founder & CEO of Deltia.ai, discussed (from left) the question of whether AI can still be developed competitively in the EU. The three painted a mixed picture: While regulations, on the one hand, mean a lot of additional effort that slows down development, on the other hand, they can also bring advantages.
