At this year's TNW Conference, around 3,500 startups, 1,750 companies, 600 investors, and 2,000 other representatives from the technology sector met in Amsterdam. Topics ranged from the role of AI in shaping the future and the business environment, to the evolution of work in the technology sector in a post-pandemic world, to sustainable innovations, AR, and VR. Lessons on how to learn from mistakes as a startup founder and how to revive a company on the verge of collapse rounded out the program. At the opening of the trade fair and conference, Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, Co-Founder and Chairman of TNW, welcomed the guests. He not only looked back on the past year but also asked what the focus of this year's TNW Conference would be \u2013 although he couldn't answer the question himself. As Veldhuijzen van Zanten explained, there is no predefined focus at the TNW Conference. Instead, the program unfolds organically, and only at the end of the two days can one say with certainty what the conference's focus will be. Ultimately, however, the first panel discussion made it clear which topic would be the focus of the conference: artificial intelligence. Under the heading "The Journey Ahead: Booking.com's Glenn Fogel on Shaping the Future of Travel," Glenn Fogel, CEO and President of Booking Holdings, answered questions from Financial Times editor Murad Ahmed. It became clear that there is no getting around AI. Fogel began by clarifying that AI has long been used in his company, albeit in the form of machine learning. Generative AI and Large Language Models, however, now offer entirely new possibilities. He specifically mentioned interactive solutions such as an AI travel planner and AI customer service. He also made it clear, however, that all of this will take some time: initially, AI will only support humans. Towards the end of the conversation, the two then focused on the regulation of AI. Here, Fogel hinted that he disagrees with the new EU regulations, arguing that overregulation would lead to competitive disadvantages. Ahmed finally wanted to know why Booking was still a European company. Fogel answered a question that was vague, saying he didn't want to rule out anything for the future. Despite the focus on AI, other topics were also covered. From wearables and brain-computer interfaces to the "skills shortage myth," to tips for investors and the impact of new technologies on democracy, many different topics were discussed. In an insightful discussion, Bas van Abel, founder of Fairphone, Matthew Cockerill, independent design innovation consultant, and Linnea Ahlgren, senior editor at TNW, discussed the need for a circular economy in which companies take more responsibility for their products. And in various masterclasses, founders and investors alike were able to further their education on a wide range of topics. Pitches were, of course, a regular feature at the TNW Conference. Startups from various fields competed against each other in a total of four pitch battles. Among them were startups from Munich (from left): Manfred H. Heiss, founder and CEO of MyAutoData (MAUD)<\/a> in the category \u201cPixels & Profit\u201d, as well as Valentin Aman, Co-Founder and Managing Director of ESG-X<\/a>, and Barbara Bachus, COO and co-founder of Exomatter<\/a>, in the "Next in Tech" category.
