Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections worldwide, affecting 152 million patients. Detailed urine diagnostics, which form the basis for adequate treatment, are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and resource-intensive. Incorrect or often unnecessary administration of antibiotics prolongs treatment times, increases the risk of complications, and promotes the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

BugSense is developing a paper-based test that is sustainable, affordable, scalable, and easy to use. The test is designed to reliably identify UTI-causing pathogens in urine and potential antibiotic resistance. The test readout is performed using a smartphone application and can be performed from anywhere, without the need for a laboratory or specialist personnel.
