Women in Tech: Mareike Pfennig from Mellow

Mareike Pfennig, together with an old school friend, Manuel Mai, founded Mellow, an all-in-one coaching platform, in 2022. Mellow supports companies in mental health prevention and employee development. Before founding the company, Mareike studied information management and corporate communications, is a certified agile coach and new work consultant, and has worked as a product manager for digital products and platforms.

Munich Startup: What motivated you to start the company?

Mareike Pfennig: Founding Mellow was an absolute matter of the heart for me.

In my personal environment, I've repeatedly observed that many people struggle with mental health challenges, often in silence. But I also see a growing need in society. Despite technological advances and connectivity, many people feel isolated and overwhelmed. At the same time, companies are struggling with high rates of sickness and declining productivity. Mellow is my answer to these challenges – a platform that uses technology to connect and mentally empower people.

Founders need resilience and patience

Munich Startup: What would you have liked to have known before starting your first business?

Mareike Pfennig: Looking back, there are certainly many things I wish I had known before starting my first business. But if I had to emphasize one point, it would be the importance of resilience and patience. Starting a business is a marathon, not a sprint. There are ups and downs, unexpected challenges, and moments of doubt. Mental health plays a central role here. You have to learn to listen to yourself and your own needs; otherwise, starting a business can quickly become overwhelming.

Munich Startup: How has your company been financed so far?

Mareike Pfennig: We are self-funded to the tune of 100% and operate bootstrapped.

Munich Startup: When and where do you get the best ideas?

Mareike Pfennig: My best ideas usually come to me while out for a walk. But every now and then, I also like to challenge myself creatively by attending inspiring events. There, I get out of my own "bubble" and meet new people and perspectives.

Munich Startup: What are your 3 favorite work tools?

Mareike Pfennig:

  • Trello: It's great for team collaboration. It helps me plan projects, prioritize tasks, and keep track of things.
  • Canva: An absolute game-changer when it comes to creating designs. Whether it's marketing materials, presentations, or social media posts, Canva is always my first port of call.
  • Miro: The collaborative whiteboard is a great tool for brainstorming together or visually presenting ideas.

Mareike Pfennig: “Know your target audience”

Munich Startup: Your top tip on pitching?
Mareike Pfennig: Pitching isn't just about presenting an idea or a product; it's primarily about telling a story that captivates and moves the audience. My top tip for pitching would therefore be: Know your target audience and appeal to their emotions. Adapt your pitch continuously. A "one-size-fits-all" approach won't get you very far.

Munich Startup: Does this seem like a good time to start a business? Why?

Mareike Pfennig: Yes, definitely. The current era is characterized by technological change, new work models, and a growing awareness of societal challenges. This creates numerous opportunities for innovative solutions and business models. Those who start a business now can actively shape these changes, and I'm very excited to see what ideas await us in the future.

Catching up on AI applications in the healthcare sector

Munich Startup: Which technology or industry would you focus on for your next startup?
Mareike Pfennig: AI as a technology will certainly be indispensable in the future. I see a great need for (catch-up) in this area, especially in the healthcare sector. For example, in digital patient records or personalized treatment approaches.

Munich Startup: In your opinion, what could be improved at the Munich startup location?

Mareike Pfennig: I think Munich is already doing a lot of things right! The only point I could mention here is the issue of bureaucracy. But that doesn't just affect Munich; it affects all of Germany. It should be easier to start a business.

Munich Startup: Which founder would you like to meet in person? And what would you ask them?

Mareike Pfennig: There are two female founders from Germany who I find very inspiring: Dr. Kati Ernst and Verena Pausder. They both exude tremendous power and passion and are committed not only to their businesses but also to social causes. I always ask myself: "How do you manage to champion so many issues while maintaining balance?"
