The KfW Award Gründen is aimed at startups from all sectors that were founded since 2018. Companies acquired as part of a succession plan are also eligible to apply. All applicants must be based in Germany.
The competition's patron is Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck. The jury consists of representatives from KfW, development banks, politics, and business. They evaluate the business ideas based on their degree of innovation and creativity. Whether the concept embraces social responsibility or creates social added value also plays a decisive role. Economic success, ecological sustainability, and the promotion of an inclusive, diverse work environment are also considered in the assessment.
