AI Beyond Borders Awards 2022: These are the winners

The AI Beyond Borders Awards were presented for the first time. Three startups were honored, including one from Munich.

Startups in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) face unique challenges when operating their businesses across international borders. From national data protection regulations to the cultural acceptance of artificial intelligence, many hurdles must be overcome. Therefore, it's crucial to plan internationalization early, research potential markets, establish contacts early, and establish long-term partnerships in each new country. Young companies that excel in this area have now been honored with the AI Beyond Borders Awards from German Entrepreneurship.

The award will now be presented annually by the AI Competence Center, an initiative funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and run by German Entrepreneurship. Three startups emerged victorious in the first round: Ianus Simulation, Signatrix, and Hemato—the latter from Munich.

The Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, Markus Blume, said at the award ceremony:

"Intelligent solutions for brick-and-mortar retail, the plastics, pharmaceutical, and food industries, or the diagnostic process for blood cancer: The three startups honored today, with their innovative ideas, are prime examples of the enormous potential of artificial intelligence for our society—my heartfelt congratulations to all involved!"

These are the winning startups

1st place: Ianus Simulation

The Dortmund-based startup offers customers in the plastics, pharmaceutical, and food industries flow simulations to prevent design errors and optimize existing processes during operation. The so-called flow space also offers a cloud-based simulation framework that uses modern AI assistance systems based on deep machine learning and neural networks. The system enables the design, analysis, and optimization of products and processes in virtual space, thereby saving both energy and resources.

2nd place: Signatrix

The Berlin-based startup specializes in retail optimization. Signatrix uses data protection-compliant security cameras and artificial intelligence to analyze exactly what's happening in a store – in real time and without additional effort. This not only enables the optimization of work processes but also theft and fraud prevention.

3rd place: Hemato

The Munich-based life sciences startup is developing analysis software for fully automated, AI-supported flow cytometry of blood samples for rapid hematological diagnostics. This enables individualized treatment for each patient.

“Potential for successful internationalization”

The top three startups will receive cash prizes totaling €50,000. The winning startups will also receive a comprehensive package of benefits designed to increase their visibility in the AI ecosystem and the global investor community. Matthias Notz, Managing Director of German Entrepreneurship and Managing Director of German Accelerator, is sure:

"What's unique about the AI Beyond Borders Awards is the focus on the startups' potential for successful internationalization. The three finalists will therefore receive up to six months of professional support for their expansion to Singapore, Southeast Asia, or North America from the AI Competence Center's well-connected local mentors and experts."

In addition, the award winners benefit from a one-year membership in AI Park Germany and receive compute credits worth up to €150,000 each. Partners of the new award include AI + Munich, AI.Hamburg, Berlin Partner, Intel Ignite, Startup Network Europe, and Transatlantic AI eXchange, the organizer of the European AI Summit.
