Qwello and Acciona Energía build charging network in Spain

The e-mobility startup Qwello offers cities turnkey charging solutions. Together with renewable energy provider Acciona Energía, the Munich-based company is now establishing a joint venture to install public charging points in Spanish cities.

The joint venture will develop, operate, and maintain a network of charging stations for electric vehicles in public urban spaces. Qwello will contribute its user platform and charging technology. Acciona Energía, in turn, will supply the planned charging points with renewable electricity and be responsible for their operation and maintenance.

The charging stations will primarily be 11 kW charging points. The companies hope to solve two fundamental problems with them: the availability of public charging stations in cities and their ease of use. In Spanish cities, only 2 percent of charging points are publicly accessible, which amounts to approximately 60 public charging points in cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

Qwello and Acciona Energía aim to “offer unique added value to the Spanish market”

"The European electric vehicle industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by rapidly falling battery costs, increased climate awareness, and the expansion of EV offerings by manufacturers. Yet, the current supply of charging infrastructure is not up to the task. I am pleased that in Acciona Energía, we have found a key partner in the renewable energy sector with a leading position in Spain, with whom we can drive the development of the charging infrastructure sector. Together, we aim to create the leading provider of public charging infrastructure in Spain in terms of technology, user-friendliness, and sustainability."

explains Henrik Thiele, Managing Director of Qwello. His company already operates several hundred charging points in European cities such as Stockholm, Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. The startup's charging stations are equipped with user-friendly features, such as icon-based user communication for universal use, options for contactless credit card or mobile payment, and an integrated cable with a Type 2 plug, as well as a Type 2 socket for users who prefer to use their own cable. The associated app handles billing, reservations, and location searches.

"We have been closely following the charging infrastructure sector in recent years and know that the industry needs major investments to achieve transport decarbonization goals. Qwello's outstanding technology, proven in European cities, overcomes the main barriers to electric vehicle adoption. Together, we are confident we can offer unique added value to the Spanish market."

says Rafael Mateo, CEO of Energy ActionThe company has established itself as the primary supplier of 100 percent renewable electricity to corporate and institutional customers in Spain. Acciona Energía is already considered a leader in urban electric vehicle charging stations.
