Personio takes over Berlin startup Back

Munich-based unicorn company Personio is acquiring the startup Back. The HR company aims to further advance the automation of HR processes with the Berlin-based company's solution.

Back's software supports HR departments in processing employee inquiries via communication channels such as Slack or Microsoft Teams and sends automated responses to frequently asked questions. For example, if employees want to report a payroll error, they can do so via Slack. The HR department will then either respond directly or send an automated response via an internal knowledge base supported by artificial intelligence. This is intended to ensure employee satisfaction and save time for the HR department. Hanno Renner, Co-founder and CEO of Personio, says:

"Both Back's product and team are a great fit for us for two reasons. First, our customers benefit from a central location, a one-stop shop, for employee inquiries. Second, the Back team has tremendous experience in developing workflows that consolidate fragmented tasks. These play a key role in Personio's continued development into a leader in the people workflow automation category, whose technology increases productivity across all areas of an organization by eliminating delays."

Personio takes over back staff

Back's existing ticketing and knowledge management products will be fully integrated into Personio's offering. Founders Christian Eggert and James Lafa will assume the positions of Head of Product and Head of Engineering at Personio. Christian Eggert, co-founder of Back and new Head of Product, Workflows and Integrations at Personio, says:

"Back has always shared Personio's vision of positively influencing its customers' business success by enabling them to focus on strategic and operational HR topics. This is also the reason why Back's software was one of the first to be integrated into the Personio platform. However, through our collaboration over the past few years, we have realized that a holistic integration for workflow management within a HR platform like Personio leads to a much better experience for our customers and their employees. We are therefore very pleased to now be working with the market leader to further advance People Workflow Automation."

In addition, the Munich companies announced the opening of new offices in Berlin and Barcelona. The Berlin office will initially house 20 existing team members who previously worked remotely. In addition, all 13 back employees will become part of the Berlin team. Personio co-founder and CTO Arseniy Vershinin will move to Berlin and become part of the leadership team there.
