LunchBriefing – Software protection for Industry 4.0

The characteristics of the ‘Industry 4.0′, often referred to as ‘Intelligent Production' or as the 'Fourth industrial revolution', "are the strong individualization of products under the conditions of highly flexible (large-scale) production, the extensive integration of customers and business partners in business and value creation processes, and the coupling of production and high-quality services, which results in so-called hybrid products." (Introduction to the High-Tech Strategy of the Federal Government on www.hightech-strategie.de)

The buzzwords of their technological drivers are 'cloud computing', 'big data', 'embedded systems', 'wireless systems', 'smart sensors' and 'IT/cyber security', among others.

The groundbreaking innovations of Industry 4.0 are rarely found in hardware. The vast majority of Industry 4.0 innovations are software innovations.

Because of its ease of copying, software is more dependent on legal protection.

Innovation protection in Industry 4.0 is therefore primarily software protection.

In the Lunch Briefing, Dr. Timo Ehmann and Dr. Andreas Sykora will focus on how the increasing demands on software protection in Industry 4.0 can be legally implemented. The focus will be on patent law (computer-implemented inventions), copyright law, and database protection.

About the speakers:

Dr. Timo Ehmann (Partner at Weitnauer Rechtsanwälte) advises companies in the software, internet, telecommunications, media and publishing sectors on their operational business (drafting of general terms and conditions and contracts, in particular software distribution agreements, IT project agreements, IT licensing agreements, review of advertising measures, etc.) and in the event of legal disputes.

Dr. Andreas Sykora (Partner at Qip Patentanwälte) advises companies on obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights. He specializes, among other things, in software patenting. Before training as a patent attorney, Andreas Sykora worked as a freelance software developer and IT and litigation consultant.
