phelas wants to make a very simple vision a reality: We want 100% renewable electricity to become a “self-running” power everywhere on this planet.

Over the past 20 years, the world has made progress in reducing the cost of producing renewable energy, but scalable storage solutions are still lacking to fully decarbonize the energy sector.

The phelas team is developing Aurora, a standardized, mass-produced, large-scale electrical energy storage system based on a new proprietary approach to liquid-air energy storage. We use air and gravel as the primary storage medium—both substances are universally available and, unlike lithium-ion batteries, less hazardous and less resource-critical. The technology offers a decisive cost advantage for large amounts of energy while simultaneously offering cyclic degradability and excellent environmental compatibility. Because the storage is based on already developed and reliable technology (compressors, cryogenic tanks, turbine technology, etc.), the entire system can be operated with extreme reliability and low maintenance.

We plan to approach this market as a B2B business by selling and leasing our storage systems to grid operators, renewable energy operators, energy suppliers, and energy-intensive industries, initially in Germany, Europe, and eventually worldwide.
